Former WBO heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders has died after being shot in Pretoria, South Africa on Saturday night. SecondsOut’s South African correspondent Lwazi Ndzobongo reported that Sanders was shot in the stomach during a violent robbery-he was 46 years old.

Sanders underwent emergency surgery but died shortly after. The South African southpaw, who won the WBO title by knocking out Wladimir Klitschko in the second round in 2003, was one of the fastest and hardest hitting single punchers in the history of the division. Sanders also fought Wladimir’s older harder hitting brother Vitali Klitschko a year later but was stopped in the eighth round after giving Vitali arguably one of the hardest fights of his career.

He last fought in February, 2008 after being knocked out in a single round by Osborne Machimana for the South African heavyweight title.

Former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Michael Sprott, who has fought or sparred pretty much all the top boxers over the years, was stopped inside a round by Sanders in 2001 and said he had never been hit so hard by a single punch in his life.

During a 19 year career Corrie Sanders fought seven world champions and finished up with a record of 42 wins, 4 defeats, 31 by way of knockout. to Doghouse Boxing.
