By Marc Livitz in Las Vegas: Leo Santa Cruz clashed with Alexander Munoz for the vacant USBA junior featherweight championship on the Mayweather Jr Vs Guererro undercard in Las Vegas on Saturday. Santa Cruz prevailed via a fifth round TKO.

The two fighters wasted little time in getting acquainted. Leo Santa Cruz was clearly the busier of the pair by way of his quick jab and power punches to the body of his Venezuelan opponent. The Los Angeles fighter connected with an impressive double hook to the head and body of Munoz to highlight the opening round. Santa Cruz maintained a tight guard throughout the second as he had done in the first. They exchanged blows in the middle of the ring as the period closed.

Alexander Munoz tried to slow the action to a preferred grind throughout much of the third. Santa Cruz seemed to adjust and had Munoz on the retreat. He connected with multiple combinations to the head of his foe and scored a knockdown with about thirty seconds to go. Munoz was dazed but he made it out of the round.

The fourth began in the middle of the ring. Santa Cruz maintained his strict orthodox stance and Munoz threw wildly at times. The man from Venezuela appeared fatigued. As he had previsouly done in the third round, Leo had Alexander on the ropes once again and had him hurt as well. Munoz dropped his guard and Santa Cruz capitalized. Multiple shots to the head later and Munoz was almost sent to the canvas.

One minute onto the fifth, Santa Cruz tagged Munoz with several shots to the head and a few squarely on the chin. Alexander tried to tie up, but Leo wouldn’t allow it. He scored another knockdown and sent Munoz into the ropes. Although he did make it to his feet, referee Vic Drakulich promptly stopped the bout at the request of Munoz’s corner. Leo Santa Cruz held on to his perfect record of (24(14)-0-1) and claimed the USBA Junior Featherweight Title. Tonight was his first bout in the division. Alexander Munoz fell to (36(28)-5).
