This story was supposed to
be about a fresh and rejuvenated Tomasz Adamek, who is/was scheduled to face
Vyacheslav Glazkov on NBC this Saturday afternoon (2:30 p.m., ET/11:30 a.m.,
PT) from the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York.
As I spoke to Adamek and his
trainer, Roger Bloodworth on Tuesday afternoon, they talked at length about
cutting back their work in training camp and how, at age 36, Adamek felt better
than ever with the extra rest (of course, boxers have never admitted beforehand
that they have ever had a bad camp leading into a fight or that they felt flat
and listless).
But on Wednesday, this email
was sent out to various members of the media: “Tomasz Adamek went to the
doctor. He is not feeling well. He wants to wait until tomorrow to see if he
feels better before making any decisions regarding Saturday's fight. Will
advise when I know more.”
So right now, it's Glazkov
versus Tom Bob Anderson (in other words, TBA). But this much is clear; Main
Events and NBC are moving forward with this telecast. A press release entitled,
“THE SHOW MUST GO ON,” read:
“This is live broadcast television,” said
promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events. “We cannot simply postpone. When we learned
earlier today that Tomasz had gone to the doctor, we immediately began to
discuss contingency plans with our partners at NBC and our hosts at the Turning
Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY.”
Adamek has asked for a day to decide if he will feel up to fighting on
Saturday. In the meantime, feelers have been sent out to numerous possible
substitutes.
Duva added, “If the worst happens, we will implement Plan B. Either way,
we expect to make an announcement early tomorrow afternoon. The show must go on.
“The eight-round battle of unbeatens between Karl ‘Dynamite’ Dargan and Mike
Brooks will take place, as scheduled. More details to follow.”
So there you have it. One
way or the other, NBC will be televising a card this weekend. Adamek has
literally till the weigh-in on Friday afternoon to decide if he can fight, according
to Duva.
Main Events is in a tough
spot. It's never been easy to get a quality fill-in on just three days’ notice
and the reality is these NBC dates are extremely valuable (it's not like it's a
monthly series) and the network has cleared off two hours of air space. So there will be boxing on NBC one way
or the other.
The big question is: Will Adamek
be involved?

Speaking of boxing being
back on NBC, here's my latest contribution to SportsOnEarth.com:
TYSON
HBO announced that Mike
Tyson will have co-hosting duties this weekend with Jim Lampley during the
Andre Ward-Edwin Rodriguez broadcast from Ontario, California on Saturday
night. Not sure what “co-hosting” really means regarding “Iron Mike” but it
will be interesting to find out.
“Mike Tyson: Undisputed
Truth” premieres on HBO on Saturday (8 p.m.) followed by the newest episode of “24/7:
Pacquiao/Rios,” which will precede “World Championship Boxing.”

to former Raiders All-Pro tight end Todd Christensen, who passed away on
Wednesday. Not only was he one of the most intelligent and well-read athletes,
according to Rich Marotta (who called many of his games during his days on the
Raiders broadcast crew), Christensen was a huge boxing fan. Marotta tells some
great stories about this on his Twitter feed (@boxingrich)...
