Go Inside the Mind of “The Mad Boxing Genius” - Pacquiao, Mayweather, Cotto, Haye, UFC and More
By Joseph “The Mad Boxing Genius” Torres (July 8, 2010) Doghouse Boxing
It’s been somewhat of a slow week in boxing but not slow enough to come up with a few praises and qualms.

Antonio Margarito decided to fight in Mexico and is now petitioning for a license in Nevada.  How about showing some respect to the fans and the sport?   Return to the scene of the crime (California) and beg for forgiveness from the state that you broke the rules in.  I’ve been a big advocate for second chances but he’s spitting in the face of the sport by not going to California first.  Now there are talks of him being rewarded a big fight with
either Manny Pacquiao or Miguel Cotto?  This is a real and true black eye to the sport.

In my opinion, baby brother Wladimir Klitschko versus Alexander Povetkin is the best heavyweight fight that can be made that doesn’t include the name Vitali or David Haye.  Teddy Atlas is very big on strategy and the development of mental toughness and will have his charge ready.  At the very least, this matchup is intriguing enough to pay attention to it.

A rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto is very possible if a Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fight can’t be made.  Some are saying that it is useless but at 154 pounds where Cotto isn’t drained and a weight Manny isn’t used to, it could be interesting to watch.  However, this fight will really showcase how important the roles of the trainers’ play in the build up and success of the PPV.  Manny Steward versus Freddie Roach.  Experience versus experience.  Strategy versus strategy.  How fun was it to watch Big Floyd and Freddie Roach go at it?  How about Big Floyd and Jack Mosley?

First off, I don’t mind MMA/UFC.  I actually watch it on television if there isn’t anything else that grabs my attention.  However, why can’t these guys (Joe Rogan and Joe Ferrero, I’m looking your way) come up with original monikers for their fighters.  Mike Tyson is the “Baddest Man On The Planet” not Brock Lesnar.  He’s definitely one bad dude but don’t disrespect our sport, your sport and Brock Lesnar by giving him someone else’s identity.

Does James Toney really think he’s going to beat an MMA fighter in Randy Couture in an MMA fight by using only his boxing skills?  If you put a boxer in an MMA fight, the boxer will likely get waxed!  If you put an MMA fighter against a boxer in a boxing match, the MMA fighter will likely get waxed!  Hell, if you put a basketball player in a tennis match the “baller” is going to get schooled.  Two totally different sports.  The only thing in common is that they are both combative sports.
