Rayonta Whitfield remains undefeated!

The festive Augusta week began Wednesday night, April 9, as hometown prospect Rayonta ‘Stingray’ Whitfield, 21-0 (10), defeated Manuel Vargas, 24-3-1 (10), of Lagos de Moreno, Mexico via majority decision, handing Vargas his first defeat in eight years.

The fight was extremely difficult to score, as neither man scored many flashy, clean punches. It seemed even until the eleventh round, when Whitfield exploded early, only to catch a shot in return from
Vargas. In the twelfth, Vargas was a man on a mission, and worked Whitfield’s body diligently. In the end, as expected, Whitfield won, 114-114, 117-111, 116-112, and looks forward to a possible title shot in the junior flyweight division.

On the undercard, Dominican knockout machine Fernando Guerrero, 5-0 (5), savagely brutalized Valentino Jalomo, 2-3, before the referee finally stopped the fight in the fourth round. Guerrero fed Jalomo a steady diet of left crosses, snapping Jalomo’s head each time, and then debuted his newest weapon, a sickening right cross, early in the fourth. After multiple standing eight counts, the referee finally stopped the beating. Guerrero trains with Anthony Peterson, and is a prospect to keep watching.

Finally, former amateur standout Mark Davis, 6-0 (3), defeated Sadot Vasquez, 3-2 (1), via unanimous decision, 60-52 on all cards. Davis was simply too strong, fast, and difficult to hit, and won the decision with relative ease. It was Vasquez’s first fight since September of 2006, but he stayed game all the way, refusing to give up against insurmountable odds.
