This is an intriguing match up that is sure to provide some fireworks one way or the other. The brave Fernando Vargas is a warrior I would always pay to see because of his kill or be killed attitude and the fact that he will always fight until he is victorious or he is carried off on his shield. Mayorga is another guy who talks so much he has no choice but to back it up. In a fight between two tough guys like this, it should come down to who is more technically sound.
Fernando Vargas should win this fight due to his technical superiority. However, Fernando has issues with his back, and I know from personal experience that with that kind of injury you do not know how you will feel until you wake up the day of the fight, or even until the fight starts. He has also had difficulty with his stomach and making weight which can play a part especially if the fight goes into the later rounds.
I have followed Fernando's career from the amateurs and I know that he has a lot of pride and skill. He lost a little something back in 2000 in a war with Felix Trinidad that he seemed to never totally get back, however he still was very evenly matched with both De La Hoya and Mosley (in the 1 st fight). In both of those fights he was stopped late (De La Hoya by TKO 11 and by Mosley by TKO 10); however, he was also ahead on at least one judge's score card in both of those fights. Prior to the Trinidad fight Vargas was never knocked down as an amateur or a pro according to people who know him well. He staged a come back in that fight in which he dropped Trinidad but couldn't sustain his attack after the middle rounds.
What this all means is that Fernando is to me a hall of fame fighter who only lost to the best fighters of his era, Trinidad, De La Hoya and Mosley. I still feel the knockdown he suffered in round 1 of his fight with Felix Trinidad back in 2000
and the ultimate result of that fight, impacted his career more than people realize. Obviously, not as much as David Reid, who was never able return to top form after losing to Trinidad, but enough to take the little bit he needed to succeed with the best couple fighters of the era. Despite it, he still beat everyone who has stood in front of him in his career except those three fighters, and yes that includes Winky Wright who he beat by a narrow margin.
Ricardo Mayorga has a legitimate punchers chance, but unless his body fails him Fernando's mind, heart and pride will not let him down. Outside of Fernando having a problem with an injury or conditioning, I see him winning the fight. Mayorga doesn't bring anything to the table that Mosley did in the last fight, except power. Vargas should be able to use Mayorga's aggression against him. In the end, I think Fernando will persevere and win a unanimous decision or by a mid to late round TKO, depending on the pace of the fight. Mayorga's only other chance, is if Vargas is a totally shot fighter, but since Vargas is open that this is his last fight, I think he will have enough to do what he has to do.
