After his October, 2006 loss to upstart Mike Mollo, former Mike Tyson conqueror, Irishman Kevin McBride, wants to again get big in the boxing world. His plan: get big – literally.

At a Friday press conference at Kells Restaurant in Boston to promote his October 6 bout against Pole Andrew Golota, McBride and his camp openly admitted that the 34 year old heavyweight is walking around at a hefty 293 pounds. But instead of being concerned about the extra baggage, Team McBride feels the
bigger their fighter is, the better.

Before when he was heavy, he was all fat," said fitness coach Aren Sarkisov. "Now he's all muscle."

Some exact stats on McBride's new condition:

1) The Irishman is now 18.4% body fat (as opposed to 28.9% before he began getting back into shape).

2) His shoulders are now four inches broader.

3) His bench press maximum is now 460 pounds.

Brit Danny Williams, who also blitzed Tyson (in 2005), took a similar approach in preparation (extra muscle and strength) for his summer 2006 rematch with Matt Skelton. The result: a 288 pound Williams who was slow and lethargic throughout the fight. DoghouseBoxing asked McBride if he was worried about losing speed and stamina with the extra muscle – he's not at all concerned.

"I feel faster than I have before, and I have more stamina than ever before," he said.

McBride hopes a win against Golota will put him back in the heavyweight mix. Although his training methods are risky, he feels confident about his chances.
