Speaking with both Dan Goossen and Manny Steward yesterday it appears that the proposed Kermit Cintron and Paul Williams welterweight unification match is very close to a done deal.

“We haven’t signed the contract yet but it’s pretty much done,” said Steward. The fight is mainly contingent on Cintron winning this Friday night in his bout against Jesse Feliciano in the co-feature to the Fernando Vargas/ Ricardo Mayorga fight. “Last I heard, there was talk of doing it at the Nokia Theatre” said
Steward. The Nokia is a new facility here in Los Angeles, which just hosted the American Music Awards and is apparently available on the proposed February 2nd date.

“They haven’t signed yet but we’re treating it like a done deal,” said Dan Goossen from his L.A. office. Goossen has gone so far as to begin putting together an undercard that will feature Andre Ward vs. one of three proposed opponents. That list of potential opponents includes Allan Green, Librado Andrade and William Joppy.

ANDY LEE UPDATE

One fighter in Steward’s stable you won’t see on the card is Andy Lee. That’s because he will be appearing on the undercard of the Taylor/Pavlik 2 card in Las Vegas February 16th. We’re looking at putting him in with Giovanni Lorenzo,” said Steward “Bob [Arum] is putting that together.” Lee, a rising star in the Steward Kronk stable is on the fast track to a title shot it seems. “We’re hoping to get him with [the winner of Pavlik/Taylor] by November of 2008.”

More details to come.
