It was reported by several websites and news services last night that two-time champion Diego ‘Chico’ Corrales was killed in a motorcycle accident Monday shortly before 10PM local time in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was 29.

Corrales was at a cross roads in his life having suffered a loss in his welterweight debut to Joshua Clottey. He was a humble, down to earth man who loved to fight as much as he loved his family and his fans. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who witnessed his rise to champion status.

What fight fans will remember Chico most for is his first showdown with Jose Luis Castillo for the lightweight championship of the world. It was an epic seesaw battle that culminated in what was perhaps the best tenth round of all time. He would rise twice and knockout Castillo to claim not just a victory but also his place in the annals of boxing lore. The bout would be voted the 2005 Fight of The Year and is without question one of the most exciting bouts of all time.

Corrales’ career defining fight against Castillo took place exactly two year to the day prior to his untimely demise.

A true warrior, a loving husband and father, Corrales had dreams of being a commentator when he left the sport. Always quick with a smile and a few words to his fans, Corrales was that rare breed of fighter who did it for the glory and the fans. He is survived by his wife Michelle and their children. God rest his soul. For those of us not just here at DoghouseBoxing.com but in all the boxing family, Diego you will be missed.
