Hopkins by Decision; Holt Hammered
By George J. Elsasser (June 20, 2004)
The FNF ESPN Chicago tour spawned some hot ring action that saw Demetrius Hopkins staying unbeaten by technical decision over a tough and willing foe in Al "Speedy" Gonzalez … was halted between stanzas 7-8 due to severe wound to left eyelid from a head butt.

Hopkins, nephew of middle champ Bernard Hopkins, was severely tested by a lesser skilled but non-stop banger in Gonzales … scoring was unanimous for Demetrius at 67-66, 69-64, 68-65.

Hopkins goes to 15-0-1 with 6 KO’s … Gonzales drops to 14-1-1, 7 stops … was tough one to score, with Hopkins using the entire ring to keep it on the outside and "Speedy" with the constant pressure.

Both kids at age 23 and too soon to pass judgment on future considerations … but this one was an entertainer.

Semi-final welter affair featured Lou Duva find, 23 year old Kendall Holt at 15-0 with 11 stops facing a late entry to the pro game in 32 year old Tommy Davis with resume` sporting 8-1-1, 4 by knockout.

Pre-fight tape interview with Holt sees him shoutin’ he’s Duva’s best kept secret, and then the opening bell and Kendall is on the attack, rocks the 6’2" Davis with early round right hand bomb, keeps the pressure going with heavy duty shots from both sides of the plate.

Then, late in round with Tommy looking about ready to go into the ol’ hucklebuck … that yesterday dance, that went wiggle like a fish, waddle like a duck … but surprise … the Duva "secret" is out of the bag … no chin …and with final seconds ticking it is Davis with a counter right hand on the soft spot and Holt is down.

Kendall beats the count but tall Tommy is all over him with a flurry that included a second big right hand, and it enters the books as Davis by KO at 2:59 of opening candle.

Post Scripts: Holt ~ still a kid at 23 … very quick hands with the left-hook or sneak right … but lesson learned is that not all foes are there for target practice. And some, like Davis, actually punch back. Big question now is the Holt chin construction … initial right hand was tossed off "wrong" foot and while accurate didn’t appear all that explosive. But finishing flurry was non-stop and on the money.

Davis ~ began pro career late … at age 32 and a now 11 fights has mucho catch-up ahead. Not sure how far he can go at the welter and middle range.

**** Fans were treated to a scheduled six-rounder between David Estrada and Shay Mobley that in a single word is best described as "Mayhem" … this one went give and take with both tossing nothing less than bombs from start to finish.

At times, both looked ready for the proverbial cleaners, but it was Estrada claiming the prize after a brutal knockdown late in final stanza six.

Both earned standing ovations and more, but neither earned "promising prospect" status off what was more a war than a boxing contest.
Estrada ups to 5-1, 3 KO … Mobley drops to 6-2-1, 2 KO.
