It has been nearly two years since the former cruiserweight title challenger Francisco Palacios 21-2 (13 KO’s) has stepped in the ring. From contractual disputes with his former promoter, Don King, to trying to get a fight, it has been a long road. But, come September 20th, Palacios will once again swap leather as a fighter, and make his promotional debut as a promoter, in getting back to the business of boxing.

In this exclusive interview, Palacios steps into the Doghouse and speaks out on his former promoter, a three-peat against Wlodarczyk, his promotional company Worldwide Elite Entertainment, and his return. Enjoy!

Benny Henderson Jr.: It has been nearly two years since you have stepped in the ring. How does it finally feel to be out from under your former promoter Don King, and to get back to business?

Francisco Palacios:
It took me a year to get out from the contract, and then nobody would give me a chance to fight. I have been out to long. it feels amazing. I have been wanting to do this since my last fight, to get back in the ring and fight. It has been rough, I have a job, and I was feeding my family with my boxing. This almost caused me to retire, but God blessed me to open up my very own company. It has been exciting, I am my partners opened this up, it is amazing, it is like it was meant to be. it keeps getting better. I have always had faith in God, and I give Him all the glory, with him nothing is impossible.

BH: Now you are pulling double duty, as a co-promoter, and now as a fighter, you have to put the card together, book the venue etc. Are you finding time to train for this comeback?

FP:
I always find time to train. I wake up in the morning and I do my running and do my physical training. God blessed me with some really good people, they are there for me helping me. They would not allow me to retire.

BH: As I said before, when you step into the ring September 20th, it will be two days shy of a full two year layoff. Let’s talk about ring rust. Do you feel you should dip your toes in the water first, or just jump right off in there?

FP
: I have been a fighter all my life, I began boxing in 2000. I grew up fighting, my brother was a boxer, my parents were big fans of boxing. It has been in or around my life. I played basketball, but, my brother, may he rest in peace, he always had me fighting his friends who were bigger than me. I have been fighting my whole life. Ring rust is not a concern for me. I get my ring rust out when I spare, I will be fine. I told my matchmaker not to match me against a fighter with a bad record, I want to fight somebody with a good record, I want to jump right off in there. I want to fight for a title again. I want to get ranked again and fight for a title. I have a lot of trust in my training, just because I have been out of the ring for nearly two years, doesn’t mean I have been out of the gym.

BH: How many fights do you feel you will need until you will be ready to step up and get into title contention?

FP:
I would like to fight this fight, then the next fight for an intercontinental title, then I will be ready for anybody. I do not have any time to waste. I want to fight all the big names. I have already fought Krzysztof Wlodarczyk and beat him once, I know I beat him. For me, we are 1-1, I would love to fight him again. It would be an exciting bout, we are both great fighters.

BH: Anything in closing?

FP:
I want to give all the glory to God, He gave me the opportunity to become a promoter. I want to thank all who have supported me in the past and now supporting me. My team, my family, they have always been with me. I am happy, and I’m back!
