Interview by Benny Henderson Jr (May 9, 2008) Doghouse Boxing
There has been nothing but success thus far in the career of the undefeated heavyweight David Rodriguez, 28-0 (26). From twenty-eight consecutive wins, twenty-two first round knockouts and two minor titles, the fire-fisted fighter has etched out a credible career and has high hopes of earning himself heavyweight championship glory.

Banging out wins in a career that has almost spanned ten years, Rodriguez has utilized his greatest assets – size, strength and speed – to pound out victories, but although the El Paso native has had nothing but success,
there has been one ingredient missing form his career: a promoter.

So now, at the prime of his life and with a seemingly bright future, Team Rodriguez is looking for the right promotional company to propel Rodriguez to the next level.

In this exclusive interview conducted by Doghouse Boxing, David speaks on his career and his hopes of finding the right promoter to guide the rest of his career, enjoy.

Benny Henderson Jr.: You and I have been discussing your career and what you need to get to the next level, you plainly stated that you need a promoter, what are you looking for in a promoter?

David Rodriguez:
We want a promoter that will be on the same page as our team and to get me the exposure that I deserve. I am undefeated, you know people can say what they want to say about my opposition, but the fact is that I
am a lightning fast heavyweight with powerful hands. I think the main thing, with the condition the sport is in, I can really do big things.

BH: After all these years of being in the sport, what made you finally decide to get a promoter?

DR:
The main thing is, we are all ready for it now, we have done all that we can, and we are ready to make that next step. A few years ago we were picking and choosing what we wanted to do, we weren’t exactly sure what we wanted to do with the promoters, now we are all on the same page and know that we need to get somebody behind us. It is a strategic process and we have to do things right, this is a business and we have to feel comfortable with who we sign with, and they need feel comfortable with us as well.

BH: Where do you think your career would be at this time if you would have already of had a promoter backing you?

DR:
I know for sure that I would have had much more exposure. I am definitely in my prime now so I think my best years are coming. I think this is the right time to have a promoter, I have played the patient game for as long as I can, and I think now it is time to get with somebody that wants to make the right moves with me and we all benefit from it. I know I am an exciting heavyweight no matter what, so it is a win-win situation for everybody. That is my take on it.

BH: I am assuming that your long time manager Spagnola is in talks with some promoters at this time?

DR:
He is in talks with some right now, we are trying to make an intelligent decision on who we want to go with, right now everything is up in the air and we know that the next step is to get a promoter, now is the time.

BH: What is next for you as far as a fight goes?

DR:
Well, I am in the top twenty-five now, I want top spots from here on out, it is time to make move. No more going backwards or sideways, I am going forwards now. I have good experience and have sparred with some of the best in the business. I have an unblemished boxing record and I am ready to make a big splash in the heavyweight division.

BH: Why should a promoter sign David Rodriguez?

DR:
You kidding me? Because I can sell, it is obvious. Like I said, I have an unblemished career, I am a heavyweight and Hispanic and I look like a white boy, that is a seller right there. (Laughs) You know what I mean, I have the right ingredients and now it is about making the right fights. I know what I have, I am not going to sell myself short. That is that, either a promoter sees it or he doesn’t. I am going to keep going forward and I can fight.

BH: Anything in closing?

DR:
Whomever I sign with I am going to make sure the chemistry is right and that we take the heavyweight division by storm because I am ready, it is a rough business and I want to make sure I make the right decisions. This is my shot.

Once again I would like to thank David Rodriguez for choosing Doghouse Boxing to speak his mind.
