Unbeaten heavyweight contender Kevin Johnson 22-0-1 (9) remained as such, unbeaten as he beat his stablemate Devin Vargas 17-1 (7) into submission on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights in search of a heavyweight title shot.

Although coming into the fight on an eight day notice Vargas was the much busier fighter throwing punches in bunches and landing some nice combinations in the early rounds in a much anticipated heavyweight clash.

But Johnson, who was more than outspoken (as usual) in the lead up to this bout, proclaimed a knockout victory and dropped Vargas with a barrage of punches in round three. Vargas, who tried his best to gain the much needed recognition by beating Johnson, was met with more pain from Johnson, who although was not the more active fighter was more successful with his punches.

Vargas, who kept pawing at his right ear and claimed to his corner that he could not hear, was schooled with some serious sign language as Johnson poured on the pain and dropped his foe again in the fifth round.

The end came in the sixth round as Johnson kept punishing Vargas enough for the corner to throw in the towel to give Vargas his first knockout loss in his amateur and most importantly his pro career.

Somebody’s O must go and it was Vargas’s as Johnson kept his record intact with his third consecutive knockout victory. Johnson, who is now one of America’s handful of top young American heavyweights, eyes the top. Will he reach it?

Time will tell.
