This past Saturday night the in house fans at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA, as well as mixed martial arts fans around the world were given a heavy dose of cage entertainment courtesy of Showtime’s EliteXC & Strikeforce, as the undefeated Cung Le (6-0) kicked his way to victory over legendary Frank Shamrock (23-9-2) in the “Battle for San Jose!”

Both combatants went head to head in the opening round with Le, a former kickboxing champion,
utilizing his best weapon, his feet, picking away at Shamrock with solid kicks. Frank was able to fend off the assault with his arms and landed some good kicks of his own.

Shamrock, who is more of a submission fighter, opted not to go for the takedown but choose to stand a trade. Punches were not only in the bag of tricks of Shamrock’s, taunts were a big part of his arsenal as well, but had no ill affect on Le.

Le controlled the action fighting on the outside for most of the night; Shamrock was able to land a right hand and follow up with a barrage but was met again with thudding kicks from Le.

Shamrock fended off allot of the punishment with his arms, but his tight defense would be the key to Le’s victory as Shamrock suffered a broken right wrist in the end of the third round, via a kick from Le.

Shamrock doubled over in pain and hit the canvas and could not answer the bell for the fourth round, giving Le not only the Strikeforce middleweight title, but the biggest win of his career.

It has been reported that Shamrock will have to undergo surgery to repair the damaged wrist. Hamman vs. Suganuma April 5th will be next up for Showtime’s Extreme Combat.
