Green wallops Woods in one

Friday night on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights all the way from the Million Dollar Elm Casino in Tulsa, OK, top super middleweight contender Allan Green 24-1 (17) got back in the win column by walloping fifteen year fight veteran Darrell Woods 26-11 (18) in a 1:22 second first round romping.

Coming off the first loss of his career this past March from the hands of Edison Miranda, in what was an entertaining yet unanimous decision that was not in his favor, the Oklahoma native was out to make a statement.

Although a forty year old journeyman was Green’s opponent, Woods has been in with some very credible names in the business and was coming off a stunning win over the former undefeated highly touted Samuel Miller this past March and looked to continue the upset streak, but Green had other plans for the night.

As soon as the bell rang Green come out as a man on a mission taking the fight to his opponent and although Allan missed two left hands, his right hand was the money shot that sent Woods down with in thirty seconds of the opening round. Woods made the count but was automatically met with a strong offensive burst that Green offered up and after hurting Woods once again with a couple more punishing right hands, Green pinned Woods on the ropes and threw out a sixteen punch flurry (not all landing) that prompted referee Gerald Ritter to mercifully call a halt to the bout at 1:22 in the first round, giving Green his sixth first round knockout win.

After the bout a very content yet still hungry Green told ESPN commentators that he proved with this win that his loss back in March to Miranda was a fluke, and all though he felt he was only 75% coming into this bout from his illness, he had to make a statement.

“I did not come here to box and to give the people a show,” said Green. “I came out here to make a statement and to serve notice to Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler.” Green even brought up the name Jermain Taylor. When asked about a rumored match-up with Peter Manfredo Jr., Green strongly stated, “I am still waiting on my contract, I am hungry and I
will fight anybody!”

In other action of the night the Mexican born boxer Ramon Montano 13-3-2 earned a hard fought unanimous decision over the hard hitting Kansas native Derrick Campos 13-4 (9) in an eight round light welterweight throw down. Although Campos had his moments the feather-fisted much faster Montano picked away at Campos earning the W via scores of 80-72 across the board.

In cruiserweight action, ‘Lightning’ Mike Cooper 7-1-1 (6) battled to a draw against the journeyman Jim Franklin 8-8-1 (5) in an entertaining four round scrap. Although Franklin had been stopped in seven of his last eight bouts, the Kansas native made it a very competitive fight, giving the once beaten Cooper all he could handle, and very well could have made Cooper, a twice beaten fighter, but the powers that be rang for the hometown Cooper.
