Last Thursday night August 17th at the Houston grand Plaza Hotel in Houston, Texas Browning Boxing returned with an action packed grand slam night of boxing with five fights that took center stage and kept the ringside fans’ interest while the ring combatants waged war with in.

The main event featured the undefeated rising heavyweight star David ‘Ni’no’ Rodriguez, 23-0 (22), who kept his unblemished record in tact in a good solid scrap against the seventeen-fight veteran and tough-as-nails brawler John Turlington. The first time these two fighters met back in April of ’04 Turlington was credited with being the first and only man to go the distance against Rodriguez, this time the fight was a turn around for both.

As the fight began Turlington came out firing off on Rodriguez throwing bombs right off the bat prompting Nino to go into defensive mode, but not long after Turlington’s barrage began it was answered back with some heavy shots from Rodriguez as well. The two continued to trade for the first round with both taking in some leather as well as handing it out in what was an entertaining all action round.

Round two Rodriguez came alive using his 6’5” frame and reach advantage to utilize the jab and luring Turlington in with quick feints, smacking his foe with some serious combinations and with a short left hook dropped Turlington who hit the
canvas hard but made his way up to beat the ten count. As the two went back to war Rodriguez kept his composure, picking his shots with jabs and body work and landing some heavy leather. Turlington was still in brawl mode throwing at will and trying to land the haymaker but he was met with a rock-solid left hook to the body that dropped the ‘Iron’ man for the second time in the round.

Turlington made his way back up off the floor to try to continue on but was met with force from Rodriguez who went back to work putting Turlington on the ropes, finishing off his opponent with a severe right hand following up with the left hook dropping Turlington for the third and final time of the night when referee Barry Yeats called a halt to the action at the 2:22 mark in round two, giving the El Paso native his fifth straight knock out and twenty-third straight victory.

After the bout Rodriguez had this to say to the Doghouse about his second go around, “I think it just put an exclamation point the second time around, I had to deal with his trash talking with going the distance with me and him being the only man who could do that. And now finally getting him again in the rematch knocking him out in the second round I think it shut everybody up, but I give him credit, he is tough.”

In the co main event the 154-pound undefeated Houston based boxer Chase Shields 20-0-1 (11) outclassed outworked and literally chastised the Louisianan Thomas Grissom 2-20-1 (1) in a three round rollover for his hometown fans. Although Grissom was overmatched he was a game fighter who wasn’t afraid of the pain that Shields dealt out, and there was a lot of pain dealt out from round one all the way to the merciful stoppage.

A much faster Shields went right to work as the bell sounded for round one, beating Grissom to the punch out landing the Monroe native with an effective jab. Grissom took more than what he dished out but hung in there after severe punishment Shields gave out, after Grissom tasted the canvas a total of three times the punishment was halted at 1:53 in the third round giving Shields his first KO victory in nearly a year.

The undercard produced its share of sparks as well.

Heavyweight Brad Bowers 5-5 (5) earned his second straight KO victory after dropping three straight by roughhousing newcomer Donzell Atkins 0-1 into submission. Bowers was deducted a point for rough tactics in the second round and after Atkins couldn’t continue from the assault referee Barry Yeats halted the action at 2:06 in the second round.

Light Middleweight prospect Darryl Nolan 3-1 (2) banged out a four round majority decision over the long time journeyman Mikel Williams 5-17-4 (2) in what can best be described as a slow-paced bout. And undefeated featherweight prospect Elezar Renteria 5-0 (4) kept his unblemished record intact by overwhelming Myriaum Clark 0-1 in just two rounds.

All and all it was an entertaining card that had the fans cheering for more with the fight night heating up with action. Browning Boxing is back and has future plans to continue the fistic festivities!
