Minto set for Schulz!
By Benny Henderson Jr - A.K.A "Big Dog" (Nov 23, 2006)
Coming up this Saturday evening while most folks will be finishing off their left over turkey sandwiches, American heavyweight Brian Minto 26-1 (15) will be taking on the tough task of fighting Axel Schulz 26-4-1 (11) in his back yard of Germany, at Gerry Weber Stadion in Halle Westfallen, Germany to be exact. Although it promises to be a tough fight for the Butler born boxer, it is one he accepts confidently.

“The odds are against me, it’s obvious they brought me to Germnay to lose to Schulz, it will be a challenge but I am always up for one,” states Minto. Minto has been an active fighter since making his professional debut, which is just a few days short of being four years. Standing at 5’11” with an average weight of 215-pounds he is a small fighter compared to his usual opponents, but he packs a heavyweight heart that has earned him twenty-six victories. Including the highly entertaining throw-downs he had against Vinny Maddalone, he stopped the New York brawler both times in entertaining fashion. His only blemish on his record, the one that gives his retractors their biggest platform to speak against Minto,
came from the hands of Tony Tubbs in December of ’04.

His upcoming opponent is one tough customer as well. Schulz has had some decent scraps in his time as a professional and by all means should have gotten the nod over George Foreman back in 1995, but he has been inactive since being defeated by the now IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in September of ’99, and Minto feels the six year lay off could play in his favor.

“Axel hasn’t fought in six years and we are fighting in a ten rounder,” explains Minto, “I understand he has been training a good while for this fight and I am expecting the best Schulz that I can possibly expect, but I think I am going to surprise a lot of people.”

Fighting your foe in their hometown is tough enough, but to battle one in their own country could just about be compared to shooting yourself in the foot, it is almost a guaranteed losing situation that has the odds stacked highly against you as Minto explains: “I am going to be the underdog in Germany, I know everybody will be against me and I will not get any close decisions, all of them are going to be trying to intimidate me as well, but hey, I am up for those kind of challenges.”

A win could just about be defined as a loss in some terms. Will most fans and media be happy with the outcome? If he losses, well, he was never up to par as a heavyweight anyway; if he wins he defeated a fighter with six years of ring rust. But Brian doesn’t bother with the critics. “People will say what they want to say, I am a fighter and I am fighting to provide for my family and that is what matter most to me.”

But what can a win do for Brian and his career?

“Axel Schulz is a good name to have on your resume, a win can possibly set me up with bigger fights in Germany and maybe even here in America.”

Regardless if you think Minto will come out victorious or not you can’t take away the fact that he is willing to travel to hostile territory to try to get the win. It is a situation that could prove ugly for him with his critics, but then again it may bring in some positive points as well. Either way, and no matter the outcome or what people may say on this fight, one thing is for sure: Brian Minto is set for Axel Schulz!
