Coming up this Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut, once beaten heavyweight prospect Joey Dawejko 7-1-1 (3) looks to get back in the win column as he takes on the undefeated hard hitting Jarrell Miller 4-0 (4) in a scheduled six round heavyweight bout. In Dawejko’s last outing, the Philly fighter lost a split decision to Virginia’s Dorsett Barnwell, in a bout that Joey calls a fluke. In this exclusive interview, Joey speaks out on his upcoming bout, and more, enjoy.
Benny Henderson Jr.
So you have a big fight coming up this Saturday. Can you tell us about your training going into this fight?
Training is great. I recently changed trainers from Brian McGinley to Billy Briscoe. He’s a very special trainer and one of the best kept secrets in Philly.
What is he teaching you different than your previous trainer?
It’s a whole new game plan. He’s really working on my weaknesses trying to get that part of my game better while improving on the things I do well. He’s got different training methods that are really making me a better fighter.
What can you tell us about your opponent Jarrell Miller?
I can just tell his name and his record that’s about it. I’ve seen a few clips on his fights but I really don’t get into watching film too much, I just do what I have to do on fight night. I leave all that stuff to my trainer and let him come up with the game plan. When I’m training or in the fight I listen closely to my corner.
You’re the type of fighter that takes on all comers, regardless of size and record. This will be the second fight in a row where you’re facing an undefeated fighter. Why take that risk?
You know I do what a lot of people won’t do and that’s fight anyone, anywhere on any given day. The last guy I was supposed to fight was undefeated and he pulled out at the last minute. I was fighting him on his own turf in Canada but he refused to step in the ring with me. At the end of the day fighting tough fights is only going to make me a better fighter.
I heard that your fight me be televised. What are your thoughts if that were to happen?
You know is great for those who can’t make the trip to see me fight live. I’m excited to show my people that I’m the real deal. Whether you’re watching live on TV or at the show, I’m going to be ready to put on a great performance.
What can you tell us about Boxing 360? How is that relationship coming along?
Ah man Boxing 360 is great. Mario Yagobi is always there if I need anything. I can call him at any time of the day and he’ll pick up. Boxing 360 is becoming one of the best promotional companies in the sport. I’m very thankful for all the opportunity’s that Boxing 360 has give me in my career. Together we are going to the top.
If you come out victorious on Saturday, what are your plans moving forward?
I’m just looking toward Saturday night and whatever comes after I’ll be ready to step up. I don’t really want to be fighting in 4-round or 6-round bouts anymore, I’m ready for 8-rounders. I want to build up a good record and continue climbing up the rankings.
Are there any last words you want to tell your fans?
I appreciate everyone’s support. Even though I lost my last fight, I feel it was a fluke. I’m going to come back stronger and be ready for the toughest challenges in the future.
