Kevin McBride; “I am going to do what I did to Mike Tyson to Andrew Golota…retire him from boxing!”
INTERVIEW BY Benny Henderson Jr (Oct 5, 2007) DoghouseBoxing
Coming up this Saturday night from the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City, two big men will collide as 6’6” Irishman Kevin McBride 34-5-1 (29) goes head to head against the 6’4” Polish power puncher Andrew Golota 39-6-1 (32) in a scheduled ten round heavyweight match-up, a fight that McBride says will not see the scorecards.
McBride was riding a seven fight winning streak, all by knockout, when he stepped in against the hard hitting Mike Tyson. Nobody in or around the fight world gave Kevin much of a chance to beat the legend, but after six rounds
McBride came out victories sending Tyson into retirement. After the big win many felt McBride would capitalize on the W, but one win down McBride was stopped by Mike Mollo in the second round, losing hope of a world title shot.
Now one year later and a new team surrounding McBride, the fighting Irishman is ready to get back in the ring and demands that he will send another to retirement. Doghouse Boxing recently caught up with Kevin who took the time out to give his thoughts on this weekend’s fight, enjoy.
Benny Henderson Jr.: Kevin, thanks for taking the time out to speak to the Doghouse, first off give us your thoughts on your upcoming fight against Andrew Golota.
Kevin McBride: It’s going to be an exciting fight in Madison Square Garden with two big men in the ring. I am going to go in there ready, I have a new team around me and they have been looking out for me and I have a different perspective than before. I am feeling stronger than what I did when I fought Mike Tyson. I know my last fight was a bad fight but I have been working harder and have stepped it up with McGirt and I will prove to the world that I am a contender and I
am going to do what I did to Mike Tyson to Andrew Golota, retire him from boxing.
BH: Coming off a loss right at a year ago, do you feel this is a must win situation for your career, and if so what pressure does that bring down upon you?
KM: This is a must win fight, Kevin McBride is going to be 100% and ready to take on Andrew Golota and show the world that I can beat him and move on to bigger and better things. I have had three dreams, one was to box in the Olympics, two was to fight Mike Tyson and three is to be the first-born Irish heavyweight champion of the world. I am big and strong enough to do it. Boxing is the most beautiful sport in the world and anything can happen in that ring, I am sure this fight is going to write a new chapter in my life. I will fight whomever Don King puts in front of me and Andrew Golota is in my way. You are going to see an exciting fight and it will not go the distance. I like the Polish people but Golota is in my way.
BH: Coming off the big win over Tyson many thought as I did that you would capitalize on that win, instead, your career stalled a bit, being brutally honest why wasn’t that win over Tyson taken advantage of?
KM: My handlers at the time did not step up to the plate, my team around me then is not as good as what is around me now in looking out for me. A lot of promises but nothing. It was such a high when I beat Tyson I could have went and fought for a world title, but I lost the hunger. But now I have a team and the hunger bigger and better than before. I am looking forward to this fight and I am not looking past it. They say Andrew Golota is a dirty fighter, there is not to many more fighters dirtier than Tyson, he is trying to bite my nipple off, hitting me bellow the belt and head butting me, so Golota does no phase me. It is going to be a great fight and thanks to Doghouse Boxing for publicizing it, it is a great website that keeps people on their toes in the sports world. I am looking forward to this fight.
BH: Andrew Golota, in my opinion, physically he is one tough cat, as everybody knows he lacks in the upstairs department. How are you going to approach this fight, and do you feel his mental break downs in the past is something that you can exploit and use against him?
KM: I think that Andrew Golota thinks that this fight is going to be a stepping stone for him, but he has another thing coming because it is a good stepping stone for me. I am going to go in there and do whatever I have to do to beat him. I am coming out of that ring either two ways, one with my hand raised or two in a stretcher because I am going to leave it all in there.
BH: You have two big and strong men coming into the ring to face one another, sixty one knock outs between then two of them. Personally I see this as a knock down drag out with somebody going down, what type of fight are you expecting?
KM: Definitely, it is not going to go the distance, one of us is going to get knocked out and it is not going to be me, I believe in my power and my ability. It is going to be an explosive and exciting fight. People are going to be on the edge of their seats. It is my time now to prove to the world that I have made mistakes in the past but with my new team around me I am ready, they stepped up to the plate and gave me all the tools that I need to get ready for this fight.
BH: If you could send out a message to Andrew Golota, what exactly would you tell him?
KM: That I’m going to break him.
BH: Is there anything you would like to add to or say in closing of this interview?
KM: I would like to thank Jerry Quinn for believing in me and thanks to all my Irish supporters. Come out October 6th and witness a great night of boxing. And I want to thank Doghouse Boxing for talking to me and to all their readers believe. People said that I had no chance against Mike Tyson but I prove to the world that if you believe in yourself you can accomplish anything, and I believe that I am going to beat Andrew Golota and become the first Irish born heavyweight champion of the world.
I would like to thank Bob Trieger for setting up this interview, and a thanks goes out to Kevin McBride for his time and thoughts.
