Calvin Brock: “Believe in me, because I will become champion”
INTERVIEW by Benny Henderson Jr (May 28, 2007) Doghouse Boxing
Coming up June 2nd at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ, heavyweight contender Calvin Brock 30-1 (23) takes another stab at garnering a win to once again put himself into a heavyweight title match-up. The ‘Boxing Banker’ faces off against Puerto Rican southpaw Alex Gonzalez 18-4 (8) in what will be Brock’s second bout since dropping his first and only loss of his career to the hands of the IBF heavyweight titleholder Wladimir Klitschko.

Hailing from North Carolina, the 6’2” hard-hitting heavyweight made his professional entrance in early 2001 winning his debut via third round TKO. Brock found success by defeating all in his pathway while making his climb up the heavyweight ladder.

Calvin tallied up wins over the likes of Terry Smith (UD 10), Clifford Etienne (TKO 3), Jameel McCline (UD 10) and Timor Ibragimov (UD 12) before challenging the 6’6” towering Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko for his IBF heavyweight strap the fall of 2006.

Brock had success in the opening rounds of the bout giving the champion trouble, but Klitschko began to land the punishing jab precisely on target and in the seventh round landed that killer shot that had Brock face first on the canvas. Although Brock beat the count he was in no shape to continue so referee Lee Rogers called a halt to the bout at 2:49, giving Brock his first loss of his career.

Although Brock dropped his dream of becoming world heavyweight champion in his first go around, the thirty two year old vowed to return and one day carry the name of world champ.

Three months after his disappointing loss to Klitschko, Brock returned to the ring with a new outlook and new trainer Pernell Whitaker, winning his return with a first round romping over journeyman Ralph West. Now Brock is ready to continue on in hopes of getting another shot at the heavyweight strap, and all though Brock fell short of his goal, he firmly believes that he will one day carry the heavyweight crown.

In this exclusive interview with Doghouse Boxing, Calvin Brock speaks out on his upcoming match-up, as well as giving his thoughts on the loss to Klitschko and peaks at the future, enjoy.

Benny Henderson Jr.: Give the readers your thoughts on your upcoming June 2nd bout against Alex Gonzales.

Calvin Brock:
My thoughts are that I am in great shape and looking forward to being in the ring with my new trainer again. I am still going to become the heavyweight champion and this will bring me a step closer to doing so.

BH: How has it been working with Pernell Whitaker?

CB:
It has been great, I have been learning a lot from him.

BH: What do you know about your opponent Alex Gonzales?

CB:
I do not know anything about my opponent, I just know he is a southpaw and I am going to come out and work my jab.

BH: How did it feel to get back in the win column this past March with your first round victory over Ralph West?

CB:
It felt great; it is like I have a refreshed start. To me it is like I am starting my career all over again.

BH: I am not trying to dwell on the past but looking back on your fight against Klitschko what did you take away from the loss that could possibly be useful in the future?

CB:
Well basically I learned that you can over-train, I did some things that caused me to do so, now I have me a new trainer now in Pernell Whitaker. There are a lot of things that I did want to do in that fight but I could not do it because my body would not allow me to do it, but now I am ready for the future.

BH: How is your outlook on your future?

CB:
My outlook is great, my outlook was great as soon as I stepped out of the ring with Klitschko because I told everybody at the press conference that without a doubt I will become heavyweight champion of the world, and they will see that in the future. I was confident and I am still confident, I am boxing better and boxing smarter. I have a different camp and a different team I am looking forward to having a real bright future.

BH: In the future would you being willing to rematch Klitschko?

CB:
Oh absolutely, I definitely want a rematch. No matter how many other titles I win I feel that I can beat him as long as he is still boxing and at the top. I will show the world that I am the true champion.

BH: What are your thoughts on Klitschko vs. Brewster II?

CB:
I do not have any thoughts on it, I mean we will have to watch the fight and see how it comes out.

BH: Is there anything you would like to say to the fight fans, to your opponent or anything you want to add in closing?

CB:
I want to thank all my fans that still continue to follow my career, believe in me because I will become a champion!
