Watchdog – Steve’s PPV Criteria: Vargas vs Mayorga
WATCHDOG by Steve Hudgins (Nov 23, 2007) DoghouseBoxing
THE PURPOSE: I don't think any one fight can be made in boxing today, that alone, is worth the price of a PPV. Unless of course, they can conjure up Dempsey vs Marciano or Joe Louis, but until that day comes, I want some quantity to go along with quality!

I say, if they want us to shell out 30, 40 sometimes 50 bucks per PPV, they should give us some bang for our buck! The card should be solid from top to bottom! Or at least it should be so top heavy with excellent fights that they can get away with a showcase fight to kick off the festivities, but these 2 or 3 showcase fights and 1 decent to mega
main event PPV's are for the birds! (My apologies to any of the birds I may have offended with that statement.)

So here's my system: I preview and rate every fight that is scheduled to be televised on a PPV Boxing Card, and try to determine whether that card is worth purchasing or not based on my point system below.

Please note that at the end of each preview, I will mention what weight class the bout is being fought at and where each fighter ranks within that weight class. This is done by using "The Ring" ratings.

HERE'S HOW STEVE'S PPV CRITERIA WORKS!

POINTS:

6 = MEGA MATCHUP
5 = Excellent Matchup
4 = Good Matchup
3 = Decent Matchup
2 = OK Matchup
1 = Bad Matchup

If a fight is scheduled to be televised on the card, it gets at least 1 point. This helps to reward quantity.

POINT SYSTEM:

14 or higher = GET IT!

13 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is 24.99 or less, GET IT!

12 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is 19.99 or less CONSIDER getting it.

11 = If you can find a place that is showing it, or get enough people over to split it with you, so that you are not paying more than 10 dollars for the card, CONSIDER getting it.

10 or under = Save your money and sleep well at night knowing you didn't get ripped off!

AND AWAY WE GO!

November 10th – PPV PRICE: $44.95

FERNANDO VARGAS 26-4 (22) vs RICARDO MAYORGA 28-6-1 (23)

This matchup is really insignificant. Vargas hasn’t done anything in ages and Mayorga has had virtually no success north of 147 lbs. That being said, it’s hard to imagine this fight being boring. There is a risk of a quick KO in either direction, which is usually a bummer when you’re shelling out a lot of money. It really is a “who cares?” fight, but it will probably be fun while it lasts.

*This fight is taking place at Super Middleweight (168 lbs) – Neither fighter is rated*

SCORE = 4

KERMIT CINTRON 28-1 (26) vs JESSE FELICIANO 15-5-3 (9)

Warm up fight for Cintron. If he wins he faces Paul Williams in February on HBO. This is a sparring session.

*Kermit Cintron is rated # 6 at Welterweight (147 lbs) – Jesse Feliciano is not rated*

SCORE = 1

ROMAN KARMAZIN 35-2-1 (22) vs ALEJANDRO GARCIA 25-2 (24)

Karmazin finally gets back in the ring after another long lay off. It’s just crazy that this is only his 3rd fight since upsetting Kassim Ouma back in 2005! He lost a close decision to Spinks nearly a year and a half ago and had a warm up fight he won in 4 rounds back in January. However, Karmazin is facing a fighter who is coming off an even longer layoff than him! Good puncher, Alejandro Garcia steps back into the ring for the first time since losing a war to Jose Antonio Rivera in the first half of 2006. Garcia has taken big steps up in competition twice and lost both of those fights. This is another step up for him. It’s a pretty decent matchup, but there’s bound to be a lot of rust on both guys, which means it may take several rounds for these guys to really get going.

*This fight is taking place at Jr. Middleweight (154 lbs) – Neither fighter is rated*

SCORE = 3

JASON LITZAU 22-1 (19) vs EDEL RUIZ 29-17-4 (20)

Litzau is always fun, but he’s fighting a guy who is 2-5-1 in his last 8 bouts. C’mon!

*This fight is being fought at Jr Lightweight (130 lbs) – Neither Fighter is rated*

SCORE = 1

FINAL SCORE = 9

SUMMARY: There will probably be some fun moments on this card, but for $44.95? There is absolutely no way anyone should anyone get this.
