WATCHDOG by Steve Hudgins (Nov 29, 2007) DoghouseBoxing
This week Watchdog tackles PPV Thoughts, Mayweather Jr. vs Hatton, the ridicule over Cotto vs Mosley, Hopkins vs Calzaghe, Fight of the year and so much much more!
Did I hear correct? Is the Mayweather vs Hatton PPV card priced at $54.95? Josh - Bangor
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: You are correct sir. And if PPV’s continue to do well at this price, you’ll soon be
seeing them for $59.95. You would think at some point people would stop paying those outrageous prices for PPV cards on principle alone, but it doesn’t seem to be happening yet.
I read your ppv criteria on Mayorga vs Vargas and couldn’t agree more with what you wrote....I could not believe that they are showing it on ppv for 45 dollars. Dan - England
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: Another high priced PPV. Surprise, surprise. Kind of sick isn’t it? But people keep buying them, so. . . . .
Your write-up is pragmatic and extremely sensible, considering the fact that the Networks and Promoters are most crudely exploiting the "must-see" vulnerability of fight fans, many of whom are, frankly, in financial straits, except to satisfy sheer cupidity and primitive corporate greed, there's no logical reason for ANY PPV fight to be priced above $25.00, whoever the prize-fighters might be! Felix
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: Well said Felix!
Do you happen to know what the undercard is going to be for the Mayweather/Hatton PPV? John, Colby NE
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: The scheduled televised undercard for Mayweather vs Hatton is as follows: Jeff Lacy vs Peter Manfredo Jr Daniel Ponce De Leon vs Eduardo Escobedo Edner Cherry vs Wes Ferguson II.
Hey l would like you to name your candidate for fight of the year. Mine would be the barnburner between Pavlik and Miranda. Would also like you to name 5 matchups that SHOULD be made in 2008.Cheers! Chinedu Nigeria
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: For me it’s a toss up between the Cordington/Bika Contender finale and Pavlik/Taylor for fight of the year. I would have chosen the Rafael Marquez/Israel Vazquez rematch over either of those if it weren’t for the fact that the referee ruined that fight by panicking and stopping it too soon. As for the 5 matches that should be made in 2008, in no particular order: 1. Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez II 2. Kelley Pavlik vs Arthur Abraham 3. Rafael Marquez/Israel Vazquez III 4. Cotto vs Margarito 5. Mayweather/Hatton winner vs Paul Williams/Kermit Cintron winner.
What do you rate Hopkins vs. Calzaghe if it goes down? Anonymous
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: I’d rate it extremely low since 1. It’s a mismatch and 2. Hopkins is currently one of the most boring fighters in all of boxing.
I am a huge fan of fighters of the past. I am wondering what you think about these fantasy matchups. At 140lbs a round robin between Aaron Pryor, JC Chavez, Shane Mosley and Meldrick Taylor. Anonymous
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: I’d pick Aaron Pryor over the other 3. I’d pick Chavez over Mosley and Taylor(Even though Taylor was so far ahead when Chavez stopped him in their 1st fight). And I’d go with a prime Taylor over a prime Mosley at 140.
Does Hatton have a chance against Mayweather? Bob, Louisiana Bayou
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: If he is able to throw punches non stop for 12 rounds, he has a real chance of out working Mayweather. He has to work 3 minutes of each round though.
Do you have anything to say to the guys who were ridiculing you for picking Cotto over Mosley now? Barbara, Hanover
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: Nope. We all get them wrong sometimes.
Purely from an entertainment standpoint, who would you match Calzaghe against at Light Heavyweight? Joe, Chicago
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: As far as pure entertainment goes, my first pick would be Glen Johnson. He’d go after Calzaghe and apply a lot of pressure. He has good power too. He’d make Calzaghe fight. That’s probably the most entertaining match for Calzaghe at 175. Clinton Woods would probably make a fight with Calzaghe entertaining also. I wouldn’t mind seeing him against Zsolt Erdei of Hungary or Chad Dawson either, but I doubt any of those would be as fun to watch as Joe vs Glen.
Hey Watchdog, I liked that production company website. When will that movie be coming out and do you have anything boxing related in the movie? Phil
THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: Thanks a lot Phil. I think I have some Ring Magazines sitting on table in one of the scenes. That’s about it as far as boxing references in the movie goes. It will be at least a few months as we are just now entering the post production phase of the game. I update the site regularly with the latest news, so check it out from time to time for the latest info. www.bigbitingpigproductions.com
