Watchdog’s PPV Criteria; Manny Pacquiao vs Jorge Solis

The Purpose, I don't think any one fight can be made in boxing today, that alone, is worth the price of a PPV. Unless of course, they can conjure up Dempsey vs Marciano or Joe Louis, but until that day comes, I want some quantity to go along with quality!

I say, if they want us to shell out 30, 40 sometimes 50 bucks per PPV, they should give us some bang for our buck! The card should be solid from top to bottom! Or at least it should be so top heavy with excellent fights that they can get away with a showcase fight to kick off the festivities, but these 2 or 3 showcase fights and 1 decent to mega main event PPV's are for the birds! (My apologies to any of the birds I may have offended with that statement.)

SO HERE'S MY SYSTEM: I preview and rate every fight that is scheduled to be televised on a PPV Boxing Card, and try to determine whether that card is worth purchasing or not based on my point system below.

Please note that at the end of each preview, I will mention what weight class the bout is being fought at and where each fighter ranks within that weight class. This is done by using ‘The Ring’ ratings.

HERE'S HOW STEVE'S PPV CRITERIA WORKS!

POINTS:

6 = MEGA MATCHUP
5 = Excellent Matchup
4 = Good Matchup
3 = Decent Matchup
2 = OK Matchup
1 = Bad Matchup

If a fight is scheduled to be televised on the card, it gets at least 1 point. This helps to reward quantity.

POINT SYSTEM:

14 or higher = GET IT!

13 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is 24.99 or less, GET IT!

12 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is 19.99 or less CONSIDER getting it.

11 = If you can find a place that is showing it, or get enough people over to split it with you, so that you are not paying more than 10 dollars for the card, CONSIDER getting it.

10 or under = Save your money and sleep well at night knowing you didn't get ripped off!

AND AWAY WE GO!

April 14th - PPV PRICE: $44.95

MANNY PACQUIAO 43-3-2 (34) vs JORGE SOLIS 32-0-2 (23)
Pac-Man is the best and most entertaining fighter in boxing today. It’s a shame he’s being buried on a PPV card like this, that will limit the exposure he should be getting every single time he fights. Solis is a decent fighter, with a decent record, but he’s taking a huge leap up in class against a buzz saw. Solis might be game enough to make this fun for awhile, but it should only be a matter of time before the Pac-Man express rolls over him.

*Manny Pacquiao is rated # 1 at Jr Lightweight (130 lbs) – Jorge Solis is rated # 6 at Featherweight (126 lbs)* - *This bout is being fought at Jr Lightweight (130 lbs)*

SCORE = 3

JORGE ARCE 46-3-1 (35) vs CRISTIAN MIJARES 30-3-2 (12)
This is a solid matchup. Mijares is the best fighter that Arce has faced in quite some time. Expect your classic slugger (Arce) vs Boxer (Mijares) type of fight, but don’t be surprised if Mijares decides to mix it up from time to time. Mijares is a good boxer, with very quick hands and a good defense, but he will stand and trade on occasion. That may not be the best strategy against a bull like Arce, who will want Mijares to do just that! This is by far the best matchup on the card and there are more than a few people who are predicting an upset for Mijares.

*Jorge Arce is rated # 7at Jr flyweight(115 lbs) – Cristian Mijares is rated # 5 at Jr Flyweight (115lbs)*

SCORE = 4

BRIAN VILORIA 19-1 (12) vs EDGAR SOSA 26-5 (14)
Sosa hasn’t lost a fight since 2003, but that’s mainly because he’s been fighting mostly softies since then. The recently exposed Viloria has shown that he is reluctant to punch, which makes him a prime candidate for an upset against any boxer who will let his hands go. Sosa is a boxer, will he punch enough to pull off the upset? He has a shot. But this could be very boring if he plays it safe.

*Brian Viloria is rated # 4 at Jr Flyweight (108 lbs) – Edgar Sosa is rated #10 at Jr Flyweight (108 lbs)*

SCORE = 2

JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ JR 30-0-1 (23) vs ANTHONY SHULER 20-4-1 (14)
Welcome to Showcase city! And guess what we’ve got in store for you? You guessed it! A showcase fight in the 1st degree! Most of Shuler’s wins are against guys with losing records. Yep, LOSING records. Just about anytime he steps up in competition he gets KO’d. Yori Boy Campas disposed of him in 1 round. Shuler was picked to make Baby Chavez look like a power punching stud to anyone who doesn’t know any better and that’s how he’ll look in this 1 or 2 round blowout. This is the kind of matchup that could get somebody killed. Shameful!

*This bout is taking place at Jr Welterweight (140 lbs) – Neither fighter is rated*

SCORE = 1

FINAL SCORE = 10

SUMMARY: The Pac-Man/Arce double-header would have been a nice step up from HBO’s recent showcase festivities, but the promoter opted for PPV and this is simply not a PPV quality card for $44.95. They were going in the right direction with this card until they went with Viloria & Baby Chavez for the opening bouts. Save your money.
