This week deals with Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Oscar De La Hoya, The Aftermath

I hope you enjoyed the fight.  Somewhat of a snoozer for me. But I would honestly like to hear your thoughts now that the fight is over. In my opinion, if Oscar had any kind of greatness he would have called out and fought  Taylor, Miranda, Ouma, Forrest, Pavlik, Spinks, or Winky. Or even done a rematch with Sturm or Trinidad.  Even if he lost it, and I think he loses to all of them, it would have shown he has some kind of heart. – Shane

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: Overall I thought the fight was okay. Nothing special, but not bad. I think Oscar De La Hoya blew this fight worse than he blew the Trinidad fight. Every time that Oscar threw his jab, he controlled and dominated the fight. Had he done that for 12 rounds he would have won it easy. As it was, I still had him winning a razor close decision, but it’s his own fault that he lost. Roach was urging De La Hoya to throw the jab in between every round. Why Oscar didn’t do it, is beyond me. If he throws the jab he wins easy, if he doesn’t he loses. He chose not to. Forget about De La Hoya fighting any of the names you mentioned. If he ever fights again, it will be against Mayweather and Mayweather only.

Is Floyd Mayweather going to hold true to his word and retire or will he fight again? – Pete

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: I think Mayweather is only going to fight again if it’s a huge fight. And really, the only huge fight out there for him is De La Hoya II. If De La Hoya agrees to a rematch, he’ll fight again, if not, I don’t think you’ll see him in the ring again anytime soon.

Will De La Hoya and Pretty Boy Floyd have a rematch? – Becky

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: Everybody figures there will be an automatic rematch, simply due to the fact that it made so much money the first time around. The fight being on the lack-luster side should bring the PPV numbers down a bit for the rematch, but they would probably still do over 1 million buys. So common logic is that there is too much money involved for there not to be a rematch.

Hi Watch Dog! I love your column! Do you think a rematch between Oscar and Floyd would be any different than their first fight? – Jon

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: If Oscar threw his jab for 12 rounds, I think he’d win a very easy and boring decision. Otherwise, we’d see the same thing. The rematch certainly wouldn’t be any better. We pretty much know what we are getting with this matchup now, and it’s not going to be a barnburner any way that you slice it.

A lot of people were referring to the De La Hoya vs Floyd Mayweather fight as a fight to “save boxing.” Did it do much to help boxing? – Anonymous

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: It got a lot of attention in the main stream press and that is always good for the sport, but the fight itself didn’t live up to the hype. Not even close. So I don’t think a lot of non-boxing fans who saw the fight are suddenly excited about seeing another boxing card. Had Golden Boy Promotions matched up some really nice exciting undercard fights, maybe some of the fun from those fights would have rubbed off and gotten more people interested in boxing, but Golden Boy decided to play it cheap and went with 2 garbage undercard bouts instead.

I paid 55 bucks for that crap! I feel used! – Carlton

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Watchdog, I just wanted to thank you for saving me 54.95. I was about to buy the PPV, but then read your column and took your advice. After watching the replay on HBO, I am so glad I saved my money! Thank you Watchdog, keep up the good work! - Boris

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: Thanks for reading the column Boris. I’m glad you feel good about the decision you made!

Watch Dog I have a question..... I would like to know why does HBO & Showtime feel they even have a right to charge for PPV's in the first place! They are already PPV!!!! I know some are gonna think I'm sounding stupid but just stop and think about it.... Years ago when we had "rabbit ears" on our TV's we saw boxing matches....great matches for FREE. Along came cable TV aka PPV TV. And they want more. Now they put one good match on the card and want $50.00 or more. Call me old fashioned if you want, I work too hard for my money to give it to the "Don Kings" of the world for a sorry show. Give me 5 or 6 premium fights on the same card and I just might buy it. – Danny, North Carolina

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: I couldn’t have said it better myself Danny. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who are all too happy to hand that hard earned money of theirs to these blood sucking promoters. Look at the De La Hoya/Mayweather PPV numbers. People were willing to pay for 1 good matchup and 2 horrible matchups. All it does is tell the promoters that people are willing to pay more money for less quality. So until that attitude changes you can expect these rip-off PPV’s to continue. It’s up to the boxing fans, and currently, they are choosing to reward this kind of thing.

THE WATCHDOG’S NOTES

This week on HBO, we have a very interesting matchup between top Middleweight contenders Edison Miranda and Kelly Pavlik. The winner may very well get a shot at Champion Jermain Taylor (provided Taylor decides to take some time off from picking on Junior Middleweights). The Main Event of the evening….if you want to call it that….is Middleweight Champion Jermain Taylor vs Top JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT contender Cory Spinks. Spinks is small for a Jr. Middleweight, let alone a Middleweight! If Taylor cannot KO Spinks, then I think it’s pretty obvious that his punching power has been vastly overrated all along.
