Watchdog; Steve’s PPV Criteria – Evander Holyfield vs Lou Savarese
Watchdog By Steve Hudgins (June 30, 2007) Doghouse Boxing
The purpose, I don't think any one fight can be made in boxing today, that alone, is worth the price of a PPV. Unless of course, they can conjure up Dempsey vs Marciano or Joe Louis, but until that day comes, I want some quantity to go along with quality!

I say, if they want us to shell out 30, 40 sometimes 50 bucks per PPV, they should give us some bang for our buck! The card should be solid from top to bottom! Or at least it should be so top heavy with excellent fights that they can get away with a showcase fight to kick off the festivities, but these 2 or 3 showcase fights and 1 decent to mega
main event PPV's are for the birds! (My apologies to any of the birds I may have offended with that statement.)

SO HERE'S MY SYSTEM: I preview and rate every fight that is scheduled to be televised on a PPV Boxing Card, and try to determine whether that card is worth purchasing or not based on my point system below.

Please note that at the end of each preview, I will mention what weight class the bout is being fought at and where each fighter ranks within that weight class. This is done by using ‘The Ring’ ratings.

HERE'S HOW STEVE'S PPV CRITERIA WORKS!

POINTS:

6 = MEGA MATCHUP
5 = Excellent Matchup
4 = Good Matchup
3 = Decent Matchup
2 = OK Matchup
1 = Bad Matchup

If a fight is scheduled to be televised on the card, it gets at least 1 point. This helps to reward quantity.

POINT SYSTEM:

14 or higher = GET IT!

13 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is $24.99 or less, GET IT!

12 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is $19.99 or less CONSIDER getting it.

11 = If you can find a place that is showing it, or get enough people over to split it with you, so that you are not paying more than 10 dollars for the card, CONSIDER getting it.

10 or under = Save your money and sleep well at night knowing you didn't get ripped off!

AND AWAY WE GO!

JUNE 9th - PPV PRICE: $29.95

EVANDER HOLYFIELD 41-8-2 (27) vs LOU SAVARESE 46-6 (38)
Some people call him the ghost of Holyfield, the shell of Holyfield, old man Holyfield. Whatever the case, at least he was once great enough so that means something. Lou Savarese on the other hand is just, well, Lou Savarese. A big guy who in his prime was game and okay. He’s coming off of a long layoff to take on the aging Holyfield. Savarese’s success in this fight will depend 100 percent on how far gone Holyfield is. The farther gone Evander is, the closer the fight will be. I think Evander has enough left to win a pretty comfortable decision here.

*This fight is being fought at Heavyweight (200+ lbs) – Neither fighter is rated*

SCORE = 2

DAVID RODRIGUEZ 25-0 (24) vs RON DYER 13-0 (13)
In a battle of undefeated KO artists who have never fought anyone, one could probably expect a sloppy slugfest that won’t last very long. I’m not sure why anyone would care about this fight at this point.

*This fight is being fought at Heavyweight (200+ lbs) – Neither fighter is rated*

SCORE = 1

MIGUEL ROMAN 21-0 (15) vs JOSE ALONSO 32-12-2 (15)
Pure showcase for the up and coming featherweight Roman. Veteran Alonso has been on the losing end of 4 round or less KO’s in 3 of his last 4 fights. It’s unlikely Roman will get much work in this one.

*This fight is being fought at Featherweight (126 lbs) – Neither fighter is rated*

SCORE = 1

FINAL SCORE = 4

SUMMARY: This is one of those PPV’s that is only a PPV because no real networks had any interest in it. Which makes one wonder, if it is not even good enough to put on FREE television, who in their right mind is going to put down 30 bucks to see it? I guess there are people out there who are crazy enough to purchase this, but I hope for your sake, you are not one of them.
