Watchdog: Steve’s PPV Criteria: Manny Pacquiao vs Oscar Larios
By WATCHDOG By Steve Hudgins (July 1, 2006)
THE PURPOSE: I don't think any one fight can be made in boxing today, that alone, is worth the price of a PPV. Unless of course, they can conjure up Dempsey vs Marciano or Joe Louis, but until that day comes, I want some quantity to go along with quality!

I say, if they want us to shell out 30, 40 sometimes 50 bucks per PPV, they should give us some bang for our buck! The card should be solid from top to bottom! Or at least it should be so top heavy with excellent fights that they can get away with a showcase fight to kick off the festivities, but these 2 or 3 showcase fights and 1 decent to mega main event PPV's are for the birds! (My apologies to any of the birds I may have offended with that statement.)

SO HERE'S MY SYSTEM:

I preview and rate every fight that is scheduled to be televised on a PPV Boxing Card, and try to determine whether that card is worth purchasing or not based on my point system below.

Please note that at the end of each preview, I will mention what weight class the bout is being fought at and where each fighter ranks within that weight class. This is done by using ‘The Ring’ ratings.

HERE'S HOW STEVE'S PPV CRITERIA WORKS!

POINTS:

6 = MEGA MATCHUP
5 = Excellent Matchup
4 = Good Matchup
3 = Decent Matchup
2 = OK Matchup
1 = Bad Matchup

If a fight is scheduled to be televised on the card, it gets at least 1 point. This helps to reward quantity.

POINT SYSTEM:

14 or higher = GET IT!

13 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is 24.99 or less, GET IT!

12 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is 19.99 or less CONSIDER getting it.

11 = If you can find a place that is showing it, or get enough people over to split it with you, so that you are not paying more than 10 dollars for the card, CONSIDER getting it.

10 or under = Save your money and sleep well at night knowing you didn't get ripped off!

AND AWAY WE GO!

July 1st - PPV PRICE: $39.95

MANNY PACQUIAO (26-0, 18 KO's) vs OSCAR LARIOS (21-0, 5 KO's)

Don't get the wrong idea. This is no tune up for Manny Pacquiao. Larios can fight. While he is not a heavy hitter, he's not a soft touch in the power department either. His best offensive weapon is his punch output. Larios is a punching machine who is always in great condition, often wearing his opponents down through the stretch run. However Pacquiao, is a monster. He's fast, has one punch KO power in either hand and has proven with his bouts againt Marquez, Barrera and Morales that he can also take a good punch. Larios' best chance here is to outwork Pac-Man for a decision victory, and while that certainly isn't out of the question, one would think that Pacquiao would catch up with Larios eventually. All and all, I expect this to be a pretty entertaining bout from start to finish.

*Manny Pacquiao is rated # 1 at Jr Lightweight (130lbs) - Oscar Larios is rated at*  - This bout is taking place at Jr Lightweight (130 lbs)*

SCORE = 4

GERRY PENALOSA (49-5-2, 33 KO's) vs TOMAS ROJAS (22-8, 14 KO's)

Penalosa, a one time solid bantamweight southpaw, who's best days are far behind him takes on a fighter who typically loses when he steps up in competition.

*This fight is taking place at Bantamweight (118 lbs) - Neither fighter is rated*

SCORE = 1

JIMREX JACA (25-2-1, 12 KO's) vs HECTOR JAVIER MARQUEZ
(28-16, 21 KO's)

Jaca, a southpaw, has never fought anyone of note and is coming off of a decision loss to Nobuhito Honmo. Believe it or not, Marquez holds a victory over Humberto Soto, but has lost 7 of his last 9 fights, including 4 in a row.

*This fight is taking place at Jr Lightweight (130lbs) - Neither fighter is rated*

SCORE = 1

MICHAEL DOMINGO (20-12, 7 KOs) vs. ALEJANDRO MONTIEL
(51-7, 30 KOs)

Montiel has recent KO losses to Jhonny Gonzalez and Tomas Rojas, but did manage to last the distance with hard hitting Vic Darchinyan. Domingo has rattled off 6 wins in a row, against nobodies. Who cares?

*This fight will take place at Jr Featherweight (122lbs)  - Neither Fighter is rated*

SCORE = 1

FINAL SCORE = 7

SUMMARY: There basically are no real undercard fights here. So if you purchase this PPV you are paying 40 bucks for Pacquiao vs Larios and while that may be a pretty good fight, is it worth 40 bucks?  Let me put it in perspective for you. If it weren't for an issue with the venue, this fight would have been on regular HBO. You can get HBO for 12 bucks a month. That means for 12 dollars you could have seen Pac Man vs Larios and gotten 30 days worth of movies and HBO shows for 28 dollars less than you would be paying to see this fight on PPV. It's a no brainer. Save your money.
