Watchdog: Steve's PPV Criteria: Hasim Rahman vs Oleg Maskaev
WATCHDOG By Steve Hudgins (Aug 12, 2006)
THE PURPOSE: I don't think any one fight can be made in boxing today, that alone, is worth the price of a PPV. Unless of course, they can conjure up Dempsey vs Marciano or Joe Louis, but until that day comes, I want some quantity to go along with quality!

I say, if they want us to shell out 30, 40 sometimes 50 bucks per PPV, they should give us some bang for our buck! The card should be solid from top to bottom! Or at least it should be so top heavy with excellent fights that they can get away
with a showcase fight to kick off the festivities, but these 2 or 3 showcase fights and 1 decent to mega main event PPV's are for the birds! (My apologies to any of the birds I may have offended with that statement.)

SO HERE'S MY SYSTEM:

I preview and rate every fight that is scheduled to be televised on a PPV Boxing Card, and try to determine whether that card is worth purchasing or not based on my point system below.

Please note that at the end of each preview, I will mention what weight class the bout is being fought at and where each fighter ranks within that weight class. This is done by using ‘The Ring’ ratings.

HERE'S HOW STEVE'S PPV CRITERIA WORKS!

POINTS:

6 = MEGA MATCHUP
5 = Excellent Matchup
4 = Good Matchup
3 = Decent Matchup
2 = OK Matchup
1 = Bad Matchup

If a fight is scheduled to be televised on the card, it gets at least 1 point. This helps to reward quantity.

POINT SYSTEM:

14 or higher = GET IT!

13 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is 24.99 or less, GET IT!

12 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is 19.99 or less CONSIDER getting it.

11 = If you can find a place that is showing it, or get enough people over to split it with you, so that you are not paying more than 10 dollars for the card, CONSIDER getting it.

10 or under = Save your money and sleep well at night knowing you didn't get ripped off!

AND AWAY WE GO!

August 12th - PPV PRICE: $49.95

HASIM RAHMAN (41-5-2 33KO's) vs OLEG MASKAEV (32-5 25 KO's) II

Their first fight wasn't great. It was decent, but not great.  It was a hard fought back and forth fight, with both guys trading jabs and rights throughout. What this fight had that stands out was the sensational through the ropes, into Jim Lampley's lap and then onto the floor, KO that Maskaev achieved. Both guys have good solid punches and questionable chins, so while another KO is likely, the odds of it being another spectacular KO, are remote. So expect a repeat of their first fight, without the highlight.

*Hasim Rahman is rated # 2 at Heavyweight (200+ lbs) - Oleg Maskaev is not rated*

SCORE = 3

JOSE ARMANDO SANTA CRUZ (23-1 13 KO's) vs DAVID DIAZ (31-1-1 16 KO's)

This is probably the best matchup on the card. Cruz likes to take it right to his opponents while throwing a lot of punches. Diaz is more of your stead-fast solid boxer. The big question will be how well Diaz can deal with Cruz's pressure. Neither is a huge puncher, but both have good pop. This fight should last into the late rounds and have a fair amount of action.

*Jose Armando Santa Cruz is rated # 8 at Lightweight - David Diaz is rated # 10 at Lightweight*

SCORE = 3

HUMBERTO SOTO (39-5-2 23 KO's) vs IVAN VALLE (25-4-1 21 KO's)

Soto, the busy boxer-puncher, is best known for his upset victory over Rocky Juarez a year ago. This will be his first venture up to 130 lbs and if he wins, he's likely to face the winner of the Barrera/Juarez rematch which takes place September 16th, especially if the winner is Juarez. Valle really doesn't bring much to the dance other than some legitimate punching power. If Valle cannot get Soto's attention with that power early, this can get one-sided quickly!

*This bout is being fought at Jr Lightweight (130 lbs) - Humberto Soto is rated # 3 at Featherweight (126 lbs) - Ivan Valle is not rated*

SCORE = 2

VANES MARTIROSYAN (9-0 6 KO's) vs MARCUS BROOKS (6-1 3KO's)

The only time Marcus Brooks ever fought anyone with a record better than .500, he lost. This matchup was made in an attempt to keep Martirosyan's KO streak, which currently stands at 5, alive and well.

*This bout is being fought at Jr Middleweight (154 lbs) - Neither Fighter Is Rated*

SCORE = 1

FINAL SCORE = 9

SUMMARY: $49.95??? What??? Did someone forget the dreadful PPV that Rahman headlined last summer against Monte Barrett in one of the worst fights ever? A PPV that did less than 80,000 in PPV buys? I guess not. This is a ho-hum card at best. Certainly not worthy of you hard earned money.
