Watchdog Answers on Cotto, Mosley, Cintron, Marquez, Juarez, Holyfield and Many More
Watchdog By Steve Hudgins (Aug 31, 2007) Doghouse Boxing
This week Watchdog bites into, Marquez vs Vazquez II, Kermit Cintron, Cotto vs Mosley, Marquez/Juarez PPV card…Holyfield and much more!

What did you think of the stoppage in the great Marquez/Vazquez rematch? – Teddy - Cincinnati

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE: I thought it was premature and just another example of how most referees in boxing today just do not know how to do their job. A referee is supposed to stop a fight when a fighter needs to be RESCUED!
Marquez was in trouble. He was in a world of trouble, but he was fighting back and did not yet reach the point of needing to be rescued. The referee panicked and stopped it a little too soon. Seems most referees in this day and age think a fight should be stopped when a fighter is hurt, but that’s not the case. The key is to step in when he needs to be rescued! The incompetence of boxing referees today really hurts the sport.

I read that Barrios had to pull out of the Marquez fight with an eye injury and that they replaced him with Rocky Juarez. What does this change do to that PPV card overall?

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE:
It really hurts it. Big time! This was originally, by far the best overall PPV of they year. I mean it wasn’t even close. I would have recommended everyone get it, easily. I was excited about the card. But the promoters ruined 2 fights by choosing Juarez as the new opponent. Juarez and Marquez don’t throw a lot of punches. They usually like to wait. For them to be in a good fight, they usually need an opponent who is going to make them fight. Barrios would have made Marquez fight. On the undercard, Ghost Guerrero would have made Juarez fight. By pulling Juarez out of the Guerrero fight, we lost that interesting matchup and suddenly in the main event we have 2 guys facing each other who are going to be standing there waiting for the other guy to throw. I’m really disappointed by this turn of
events. It’s really a shame that the wonderful PPV they originally put together had to be ruined by that decision. They should have gotten Joan Guzman or Humberto Soto to replace Barrios and kept that solid undercard intact.

Watchdog are you kidding me! Williams cannot punch worth a shit, although he throws a million punches. I would definitely take Cintron by KO over Williams; remember I said that if the fight is ever made. Cintron is almost as tall as Williams at 6' and has a way bigger punch. Margarito was robbed in that fight, IMO, he did enough to win and correct me if I'm wrong but the Champ has to be beat convincingly and from where I was watching it didn't look like that to me. Matter of fact Margarito hurt Williams a couple of times but didn't pounce on him and finish him off. And please give it a rest with the BS that Cotto has a weak chin. You starve yourself to make 140 and then let someone tag you in the chin a few times to see if you stand up to it, but like the true Champ that he is he won all those fights and by KO! If you've noticed Cotto can take a bigger punch at 147 and how can you say that Cotto doesn't have the power of Margarito, Cotto is THE most devastating body puncher in boxing right now, period! One fight does not make Williams THE MAN at 147, sorry, especially when the fight wasn't even a clear win for him. I think we should have a re-match between Williams and Margarito and if Williams wins convincingly then he's a player. Right now he's still a maybe that any of the other belt holders can beat on any given night. Boxing is my thing here at ESPN and I watched enough fights to know when someone is for real and Williams just isn't there yet. – Mike Lopez, ESPN Boxing

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE:
If Williams didn’t have any power Margarito would have mowed right through him. Is he a one punch knock out guy? Absolutely not. Does he have big power? No. What he has is enough power to keep guys honest. I also thought Margarito did enough to win, although he seemed to take off the 12th round when he needed it badly, which is inexcusable. You certainly wouldn’t be the only guy to pick Cintron over Williams, and Cintron has the ability to KO any of these guys, so he has a shot against anyone. I just don’t think he’d handle Williams’ volume punching well. Actually, I don’t think anyone at 147 matches up against Williams’ style well at all. The bottom line here though is that there are a plethora of great matches to be made at 147. These guys just need to fight it out. I think we can all agree on that. Don’t you? – Cotto gets wobbled in nearly every one of his fights when he isn’t fighting a powder puff puncher. Sorry, but that doesn’t imply a great chin. And yes, Cotto is a great body puncher, but he doesn’t have big 1 punch power. - I never subscribed to the “Having to beat the champ convincingly” theory. Who ever wins the fight deserves to win. Period. And Margarito was not a champion. The only champion at 147lbs is Floyd Mayweather. Anyone else who claims otherwise is simply wrong.

I think Cotto is a harder puncher than Margarito. I think Margarito is heavy handed, and to be honest I haven't seen too many of his fights, but I haven't seen him knock a guy out with a single punch. It seems to be the sheer volume that hurts his opponents. I did see Cotto knock people out with single punches before (Quintana for example, was pretty much finished with a Cotto left hook to the liver). It does seem that Margarito can take a bigger punch however. In any case I'd love to see those 2 fight but Williams had to come and complicate the Welterweight division. Oh well, Cotto v Mosley is going to be a good one. Who do you pick in that fight? – Will P – Jersey City/NYC

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE:
Almost all of Cotto’s KO’s are due to him wearing his opponent down to the body, including Quintana. It wasn’t the final punch he delivered to Quintana that KO’d him; it was that in combination to everything else he had been landing. Cotto is a classic “beat you down” fighter. He’s not going to score a lot of 1 punch KO’s. Margarito wears guys down too, but seems to have much more single punch power than Cotto. Check out the fight where he nearly decapitated Six Heads Lewis. I like Cotto to wear down Mosley and stop him late.

This is my first time writing in. I would like to know your feelings on Cotto/Mosley if it happens. I think Cotto wins by late TKO. I believe Mosley is a little to old for Cotto and could not take the punches that Cotto would put on him through the course of the fight. I think everyone is fooled by the Vargas fights. I mean come on, it was Vargas he looked good against and we all know that Vargas is way passed his prime. Also, what are you thoughts on Malignaggi/Chavez jr.? I am leaning towards Chavez but something tells me that Paulie does have a chance to out box him. – Robert – Houston

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE:
Welcome to the Doghouse! I agree with your Cotto/Mosley assessment completely. Chavez Jr. may be a little green for Malignaggi at this stage of his career, but I’d be interested in seeing it.

Cintron only loss was to Margarito and it wasn't about Margarito being that good it was that Cintron was having personal problems. I think Cintron brings a lot more to the table now he could KO all of those guys. – Bobby – ATL

THE WATCHDOG’S RESPONSE:
I don’t buy excuses. I saw Margarito beat Cintron down and make him quit. And please don’t take my picking against Cintron in all 3 of the hypothetical matches I was presented with as Cintron bashing. I think he’s a good fighter who has huge power and has a shot against anyone at 147.

THE WATCHDOG’S NOTES

Don’t buy into the nonsensical hype that Evander Holyfield is fighting for the heavyweight championship and to be a 5 time heavyweight champ when he faces Sultan Ibragimov in October. Holyfield is simply fighting the # 6 rated heavyweight in the world and that’s it. Nothing more. If he wins, he’ll be closer to getting a shot at becoming the heavyweight champion again, but anyone who describes this fight as the heavyweight championship of the world is just speaking rubbish. Continuing to recognize these sanctioning bodies is killing boxing. Absolutely killing it!
