Watchdog; Steve’s PPV Criteria: Carlos Baldomir vs Floyd Mayweather Jr
WATCHDOG By Steve Hudgins (Nov 4, 2006)
The purpose of Watchdog, I don't think any one fight can be made in boxing today, that alone, is worth the price of a PPV. Unless of course, they can conjure up Dempsey vs Marciano or Joe Louis, but until that day comes, I want some quantity to go along with quality!

I say, if they want us to shell out 30, 40 sometimes 50 bucks per PPV, they should give us some bang for our buck! The card should be solid from top to bottom! Or at least it should be so top heavy with excellent fights that they can get away with a showcase fight to kick off the festivities, but these 2 or 3 showcase fights and 1 decent to mega main event PPV's are for the birds! (My apologies to any of the birds I may have offended with that statement.)

SO HERE'S MY SYSTEM:

I preview and rate every fight that is scheduled to be televised on a PPV Boxing Card, and try to determine whether that
card is worth purchasing or not based on my point system below.

Please note that at the end of each preview, I will mention what weight class the bout is being fought at and where each fighter ranks within that weight class. This is done by using ‘The Ring’ ratings.

HERE'S HOW STEVE'S PPV CRITERIA WORKS!

POINTS:

6 = MEGA MATCHUP
5 = Excellent Matchup
4 = Good Matchup
3 = Decent Matchup
2 = OK Matchup
1 = Bad Matchup

If a fight is scheduled to be televised on the card, it gets at least 1 point. This helps to reward quantity.

POINT SYSTEM:

14 or higher = GET IT!

13 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is 24.99 or less, GET IT!

12 = If you can find someone to split it with you or the price of the PPV is 19.99 or less CONSIDER getting it.

11 = If you can find a place that is showing it, or get enough people over to split it with you, so that you are not paying more than 10 dollars for the card, CONSIDER getting it.

10 or under = Save your money and sleep well at night knowing you didn't get ripped off!

AND AWAY WE GO!

November 4th - PPV PRICE: $49.95

FLOYD MAYWEATHER 29-1 (27) vs CARLOS BALDOMIR 27-1 (21)

This is the toughest opponent Mayweather will have faced since he fought Jose Luis Castillo all the way back in 2002. Since then, Mayweather has been fighting hand picked softies, which consist mostly of fighters moving up in weight who have little to no power. In Baldomir, Mayweather will be facing a big, strong, tough fighter who, unlike Arturo Gatti, will try to bring the fight to Mayweather. However, the main reason Mayweather is taking this fight, is because Baldomir is not a big puncher and is a bit slow when it comes to hand speed. Mayweather would love nothing more than to keep Baldomir on the end of his jab and peck his way to a boring one-sided decision victory. If this fight is to have any entertainment value whatsoever, it will be up to Baldomir to push it and bring it out,  which he may be able to do, but it would shock no one if he can't. The fact of the matter is that if Baldomir were a huge puncher, Mayweather would be fighting Cory Spinks this night rather than Baldomir.

*This is for the Welterweight Championship of The World - Carlos Baldomir is the Welterweight Champion - Floyd Mayweather is rated # 1 at Welterweight.

SCORE = 3

ROBERT GUERRERO 19-1-1 (12) vs ORLANDO SALIDO 27-9-2 (18)

Ghost Guerrero is a strong aggressive fighter who has been hot as of late. Unfortunately, he's fighting Orlando Salido, who is probably best known for losing a one-sided snoozefest to Juan Manuel Marquez. Salido is a safety first fighter. The Ghost will have a difficult time making this fight entertaining.

*This bout is being fought at Featherweight (126 lbs) - Neither fighter is rated*

SCORE = 1

PAUL WILLIAMS 31-0 (23) vs MAURO LUCERO 42-11-1 (28)

Paul Williams is a lanky, promising young welterweight, who, if he wants to become a real player in this division, needs to step us his level of competition greatly. On this night, he'll be facing an opponent who was knocked out in 2 rounds last year by old man Vince Phillips. This is a glorified sparring session which should interest absolutely nobody.

*Paul Williams is rated # 8 at Welterweight (147 lbs) - Mauro Lucero is not rated*

SCORE = 1

DAMIAN WILLS 21-0-1 (15) vs CHRIS ARREOLA 17-0 (15)

This fight is not scheduled to be televised live. However, highlights or the entire fight may be shown if the other two undercard bouts end early enough, which is a distinct possibility. Neither of these young heavies are well known and both have victories over some typically unimpressive journeymen. However, this bout could wind up being the highlight of the night. Not because the fight will be any good, but because it will be funny to hear Jim Lampley saying ‘Arreola’.

*This fight is being fought at Heavyweight (200 lbs+) - Neither fighter is rated*

SCORE = 1

FINAL SCORE = 6

SUMMARY: Let me be frank. This card sucks! The undercard is a joke. It's so bad I don't know why they even bothered with one. The main event, while meaningful due to the one and only real welterweight championship of the world being on the line, is a gamble. The favored fighter will do everything in his power to keep this one as boring as possible, and due to Baldomir's lack of hand speed and power, he may just be able to accomplish his goal. Does anyone really want to pay 50 bucks for that? Even if Baldomir is able to make it a fun entertaining bout, and pull off the upset, that fight and the card as a whole, is simply not worth the price they are asking. Not even close! My advice is to flip over to SHOWTIME on Saturday night and watch Sergei Liakhovich battle Shannon Briggs with Juan Diaz on the undercard. Sure, those matchups are nothing to get too excited about, but at least it's free. Save your hard earned money for a MUCH better PPV card coming up on November 18th.
