The
last time we witnessed southpaw Ronald “Winky” Wright 51-5-1 (25)
in the squared circle as a professional was when he faced off against
Paul “The Punisher” Williams 41-2 (27) in a harrowing ordeal
where he was outworked and lost a 12 round unanimous decision, often
at times appearing slow and not his normally crafty self during the
bout. Once heralded for his slickness and thought of as dynamically
versatile in the ring, Wright’s defensive acumen was no match for
Williams’ constant pressure and work rate that evening, as the
affair was one-sided at best. Being out of the ring for over 3 years
now, Wright climbs back through the ropes against Peter “Kid
Chocolate” Quillin 26-0 (20), an undefeated Brooklyn boxer who is
12 years Wright’s junior, on June 2nd at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California for a 10 rounder. The
fight should serve as a platform for Quillin and a gauge to determine
just where it is that he fits into the Middleweight division at this
point in his career seeing as he is still jockeying for position as a
boxing prospect at 28 years old.
“Winky”
Wright is beyond confident leading up to this sort of comeback fight
for him. Whatever his reasoning is for getting back into the ring at
40 years old after a long hiatus is relatively unknown at this point.
What is known is that Wright is coming to fight and win. The question
that remains is who will show up? Will the boxer who beat Puerto
Rican sensation Felix “Tito” Trinidad 42-3 (35) on May 14, 2005
step through the ring ropes and play the clinician and pugilistic
wizard for our technical appreciation? Or will the weary, lethargic
and almost uninterested fighter that fought Paul Williams back in
2009 make his presence known? No one really knows. The youth of the
challenge before him doesn’t appear to faze him either. He summed
up his thoughts during a recent workout quite simply with, “Young
guys, young guys. Inexperience and all that.” “Winky” can lay
such a claim of course having fought professionally since 1990, when
Peter Quillin was a mere 7 years old. Fast forward to 2005, as
Quillin was making his professional debut against Anthony Hunter 0-2
at the Grand Ballroom in New York City; Wright was facing opponents
like the aforementioned Trinidad and Sam “King” Soliman 41-11
(17) as a professional.
“Winky”
Wright’s bravado is at an all time high in anticipation of his
matchup with Quillin. He has vowed that, “Fans can expect a great
fight. They can come to see “Winky” Wright knock Kid Chocolate’s
head off.” This could just be Wright selling wolf tickets to move
actual tickets, generate buzz, and get a decent payday in the long
run. The more hype around his belated return then the more fans might
be willing to shell out a few dollars to hopefully catch a glimpse of
the “Winky” Wright of old. Quillin isn’t a believer however,
and sees Wright as a challenge but not impossible. “I know I’ll
defeat Wright and move onto bigger and better fights in the
Middleweight division,” says Quillin. As the number one ranked
Middleweight challenger out there, Peter Quillin has to make a
definitive statement in his bout with Ronald Wright via knockout. A
decision victory over a future Boxing Hall Of Famer, even one of
Wright’s caliber, would still leave unanswered questions lingering
about a 28 year old Middleweight who has built his career up to this
point upon a knockout ratio of almost 77%. Hopefully Wright can bring
a dramatic element against Quillin and provide the public with a
compelling and exhilarating night at the fights.
Will
the cagey old lion return with a roar and regain his faded glory or
will the young cub sharpen his teeth, and his position, in the
Middleweight division and remain undefeated and a legitimate force to
be reckoned with? We’ll have to wait until June 2nd to
find out.
