Sonny Bill Williams vs. Francois Botha
Rugby star turned fighter Sonny Bill Williams (6-0, 3 KOs) outfought ancient warrior Francois “The White Buffalo” Botha (48-9, 29 KOs) over 10 rounds to win by unanimous decision at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Queensland , Australia .

In the opening stanza, Williams, with only five bouts under his belt jabbed the much slower Botha. Williams bounced his left off his hip and snapped it. Botha was measuring him for his right hand. Williams walked into the aforementioned right at the bell.

Williams kept working his jab in round two. Botha connected with an overhand right on the ropes. Williams landed a right and smiled. Botha went back to his corner with blood on the bridge of his nose.

In round three, Williams, 27, continued to beat Botha to the punch. His jab and right hand were working. Blood was dripping from Botha’s right eye.

Williams landed a hard right a minute into round four. Botha clipped Williams on the temple with his own right. In round five, Williams pecked at Botha with his jab. Botha, his hands high, connected with an overhand right (his only hope) that had no effect on Williams.

In round six, Williams jolted Botha with a sweeping hook. Williams traded with Botha at the minute mark of the round. His movement was keeping Botha off balance. The supremely conditioned Williams went right to the center of the ring in round seven. Botha connected with a left and right. Williams loaded up with his left, but caught only air. Botha looked winded as the round ended.

The Williams jab went back to work in round eight. The wily Botha was trying to lure Williams inside, but Williams would have none of it. Both fighters threw punches after the bell rang ending the round. In round nine, Williams ate another right hand. Botha followed up with two heavy punches. Williams was stunned and backed up. The aged Botha connected with one more punch at the bell.

Botha, way behind on points, went for the kill in round 10. Botha pushed and punched. He landed a left that hurt. Williams was stunned again. Botha connected with a huge right that staggered Williams at the end of the round. The hometown hero held on for dear life.

The scores were 97-91 (twice) and 98-94 for the victorious Williams who might consider going back full-time to his day job. __
