The boxer versus the slugger. It's a classic matchup in the annuals of professional boxing. Saturday night it was the slugger, Shawn Porter, who got the better of the boxer, Paulie Malignaggi, by a fourth knockout at the D.C. Armory in Washington D.C.

The bout was televised live on Showtime Boxing.

Porter, as promised, brought the heat in the opening rounds. Malinaggi used his jab and connected with right hands. Porter (24-0, 15 KOs) worked the head and body effectively in round two. A large left hook staggered Malignaggi. The two-time champion battled back at the bell.

Malignaggi, 33, used his legs more in round three. The younger Porter jabbed his way inside. His inside hooks had Malignaggi wobbly. Malignaggi (33-6-2, 7 KOs) tried to fight back, but Porter, the stronger fighter, stung him numerous times.

A right hand in round four knocked Malignaggi on the seat of his camouflage trunks. Porter jumped on the stricken Malignaggi and punished him. Two left hooks and a right hand caused Malignaggi to sag. A right hand knocked him through the ropes. The referee immediately waved the slaughter off.

“Paulie told me to tell them that I lost to a great champion,” Porter said in the ring after the fight. ”I needed this win. I had some questions. I think I answered them.”

I would say so.
