Many said he would box, but Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez (24-0, 16 KOs) opted to slug last Saturday night in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The results were spectacular as Rodriguez blew out tough Dennis Grachev (13-2, 8 KOs) in less than a round to win the "Million Dollar Super Four" tournament.
Rodriguez, 28, worked his jab effectively in the opening seconds of the fight. A right to the body and left to the head knocked Grachev back. Rodriguez missed with an overhand right, but landed a beautiful left hook to the midsection. Grachev tried to keep Rodriguez off with his jab, but was soon back on the defensive. Rodriguez continued to mix his attack to the head and body. His punches were coming in bunches.
Grachev, 30, tried to gather himself, but a shot on the noggin made his knee's quiver.
With Grachev reeling, Rodriguez let got with a long overhand right that floored the Russian. Up at the count of three, Grachev looked to his corner for help. Rodriguez jogged over and continued his onslaught. Three more body shots forced Grachev to hold. Grachev tried to fight back, but was nailed by a lead right hand. Two Rodriguez left hooks found pay dirt. Grachev was playing catcher and starting to weaken. Rodriguez landed a wicked left uppercut that caused Grachev to stagger to the ropes. A right and counter hook put Grachev down for the second time. He wobbled to the ropes with a defeated look on his face. Rodriguez, in full predator mode went for the kill. Two combinations and right hand convinced referee Stanley Christodoulo to finally wave off the massacre.
The time was 2:50.
The victory should move Rodriguez up a few pegs in the super middleweight division. His bank account improved to the tune of 600,000 dollars.
