In what was supposed to be the toughest fight of his career, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin needed only three rounds to stop former titleholder Daniel Geale at a raucous Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York Saturday night.
The bout was televised live on HBO Championship Boxing.
Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) started well in the opening stanza. He used angles and boxed. His jab landed. Golovkin looked for openings. One of his strengths is patience.
He studied Geale like an assassin doing research. He eventually went to the body and head with heavy blows.
By the end of the round, Geale was bleeding from a cut near his right eye.
Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) walked Geale down in round two. A right off the top of the head floored the former two-time champion midway through the stanza. Geale got up with a surprised look on his face. He moved away and fired a hook. Golovkin stared at him. A big right hand knocked Geale into the ropes.
Geale made Golovkin miss a number of blows in round three. He used lateral movement, but his lack of punching power was a problem. The end was near and everyone in the Garden, including Geale, seemed to sense it.
Golovkin used his jab to work Geale into a corner. After eating a right hand, the Kazakhstani bomber let fly with his own right. The punch put Geale on his back.
The courageous boxer got up, but couldn’t steady himself. The referee looked into his eyes and waved off the contest.
Geale nodded in agreement.
The time 2:47 minutes of round three.
“Thank you very much for Geale,” said the ever smiling Golokin after the fight. ”He’s a very good fighter. My tactic is to fight. I want the best.”
