In a see-saw battle, Danny “Swift” Garcia retained his WBC and WBA light welterweight titles by rallying to win by unanimous decision over Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse at a sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Garcia, 25, (27-0, 16 KOs) withstood some heavy blows from the power punching Mattysee (34-3, 32 KOs) in the early rounds. Garcia took over during the second half of the fight. His combinations caused major damage to the right eye of Matthysee.
In round 11, a barrage of punches floored Matthysee. The gutsy brawler got up, but Garcia landed shots to the head and body. The last round was witness to more fireworks. Garcia opened up, but Matthysee, 30, battled back. Garcia had the edge again at the end of last round.
Scores were 115-111, 114-112 and 114-112 for Garcia.
"Anybody who can make it out of Philadelphia," said the victorious Garcia. "Can make it anywhere."
