Andre “S.O.G” Ward, absent from the ring for more than a year, will return to the squared circle November 16 to face Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
Ward, 29, hasn’t fought since stopping then light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson. He was scheduled to meet Kelly Pavlik last January, but had to cancel the bout after injuring his right shoulder. The 2004 Olympic gold medalist is looking forward to his return.
"I'm excited to get back in the ring on November 16," said Ward (26-0, 14 KOs) in a statement. “The opponent is Edwin Rodriguez. He's a young, hungry, undefeated fighter who doesn't believe he can lose and it's my job to change his mind. I think he and his team feel like they are going to catch me slipping coming off of surgery and the layoff.”
In his most recent outing, Rodriguez, 28, destroyed Denis Grachev in the opening stanza. The Dominican-born challenger, who now lives in Worchester, Mass., is confident he can defeat Ward.
“On November 16th, I know I will win," said Rodriguez.
Ward’s WBA and Ring Magazine super middleweight titles will be the line.
The bout will be televised live by HBO Championship Boxing.
