Diamond belt at stake for Mayweather and Cotto

By John J. Raspanti, Doghouse Boxing: On May 5 in Las Vegas, Floyd "Money" Mayweather and Miguel Cotto will not only be vying for Cotto's welterweight title, but the WBC diamond belt, as well. Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya announced the added hardware yesterday.

“The WBC belt has always been respected by boxers as one of the most prestigious title they can win, and to have the Diamond belt up for grabs in the main event adds even more to this great night,” said De La Hoya. “When this fight is over, there will absolutely be no doubt as to who is the best 154-pounder in the world.”

Added WBC President Jose Sulaiman, who was quoted on boxingscene.com: "These elite boxers will fight for the diamond title. The promoters asked us for permission to [have them] fight for this belt and the answer is yes, because it makes the fight even more special."

The co-feature of the night is a battle of today versus yesterday as 21-year-old star Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez takes on 40-year-old Shane Mosley in a 12-round affair. Alvarez's WBC super welterweight belt will be on the line.
