By John J. Raspanti, Doghouse Boxing: Last week James “The Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland appeared to be the
front-runner to face junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez
on September 15 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Now a new name is being bandied about.
Former
two-time welterweight champion Paul “The Punisher” Williams (41-2, 27
KOs ) has jumped to the front of the Alvarez feeding line.
"You
can put 'Wow' in capital letters," said Golden Boy Promotions CEO
Richard Schaefer to RingTV.com. "That might be the name of the fight.”
Alvarez
(40-0-1, 29 KOs ) defended his belt for the fourth time on May 5 with a
commanding victory over Sugar Shane Mosley. Mosley had come to fight,
but he quickly realized that the 21-year-old Alvarez was too much to
handle. Alvarez showed the proper respect in the early rounds, but took
Mosley apart in the second half of the fight.
Williams, 30,
defeated Nobuhiro Ishida last February by a 12-round unanimous decision.
His previous bout with underrated Erislandy Lara produced a firestorm
of controversy. Lara punished “The Punisher” for 12 rounds, but somehow
ended up on the wrong side of the decision. Williams has split two
fights with middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and former belt holder
Carlos Quintana. His last knockout victory was in 2008.
The
fight could be an interesting physical challenge for Alvarez. The taller
and leaner Williams will have a substantial height and reach advantage.
Alvarez likes to stalk his opponent and fight in spurts. Williams'
offense is his best defense. His work rate can be extraordinary, but
could also leave him open for a counter left hook.
Other
considerations for Alvarez have been WBC welterweight and WBA junior
middleweight titleholder Floyd Mayweather, or three-time champion Miguel
Cotto.
An announcement could come as early as next week.
