By John J. Raspanti - In a grudge match precipitated by a street
fight, former heavyweight champion David “Haymaker” Haye (26-2, 24 KOs)
impressively knocked out Dereck Chisora (15-4, 9 KOs) in the fifth
round before 30, 000 rain socked boxing fans at the Boleyn Ground, Upton
Park, in London., England
The months leading up to the fight were filled with controversy as
neither Haye nor Chisora were licensed to fight. None of that made any
difference to the sporting public, who showed up in droves to witness
the bout.
Haye was the busier fighter from the opening bell. His jab peppered
Chisora’s face. A lead right hand clipped Chisora in round two. Haye
continued to utilize his speed by moving and boxing. Chisora was
stalking but not throwing.
Chisora came out with more purpose in round three. He landed a right
that made Haye blink. Haye kept Chisora off balance with a snappy jab.
He landed a strong right at the bell as Chisora countered with a big
left hook after the bell. Haye was knocked back a few steps.
Haye looked a big shaky as round four started. Chisora tried to land
another bomb as Haye moved away. Haye landed a succession of short left
uppercuts.
A lead right hand stopped Chisora in his tracks. Chisora had hoped that Haye would get tired after a few rounds.
As round five begins, it was Chisora who looked winded. Haye jolts him
with a perfect combination. Chisora stumbles forward and backs Haye into
the ropes. Haye’s big left hook lands squarely on the Zimbabwe natives
chin staggering him. Haye follows the left with a sweeping right hand,
knocking Chisora to the canvas for the first time in his career. The
28-year-old pulls himself up at the count of six. Haye goes for the kill
and gets it. Two stinging right hands put Chisora down again. He hauls
himself up but wobbles, making the decision of the referee to halt the
contest an easy one.
The time is 2:59 seconds of round five.
“Dereck has one of the best chins I’ve ever hit,” said Haye in the ring.
“Dereck is a great fighter. He gave me a lot of work. Dereck hit me
with some great shots.”
The beaten Chisora finally showed some class by congratulating Haye.
“Congratulations to David, “Chisora said. “I owe David Haye twenty grand for charity”
