By John J. Raspanti, DoghouseBoxing. On the undercard of the Gennardy Golovkin
- Grzegorz Proksa title bout, Jonathan Gonzales and former WBO junior
middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk battled to a draw. Gonzales, 23,
missed making weight by a whopping nine pounds. Dzinziruk, 36, a
southpaw, accepted the fight after getting an additional $100,000
dollars added to his purse.
Gonzales (15-0-1, 13 KOs) was the more aggressive fighter in the opening
stanza. Dzinziruk (37-2-1, 23 KOs) hung near the youngster, throwing
right jabs. A straight right hand in round two hurt Dzinziruk. Gonzales
easily won the second round by being busier and landing the harder
punches. Dzinziruk landed a good let to the belly of Gonzales. Gonzales
moved and boxed more in round three. Dzinziruk though outworked his
opponent.
A hard right by Gonzlaes sting Dzinziruk again in round four. Dzinziruk
posed, but didn't punch much. Gonzales landed a good combination in
round five. His power advantage was becoming more obvious. Dzinziruk
jumped off his stool in the next round. Gonzales was happy to oblige him
with punches. Dzinziruk landed a clean left. Gonzales landed a strong
uppercut that stopped Dzinziruk in his tracks.
In lucky round seven, Gonzales landed two hard right hands that knocked
Dziniruk back on his heels. Dziniruk was throwing one punch at a time.
Gonzales kept landing combinations in rounds eight and nine. Dziniruk
was staying busy with light scoring punches. In round ten, the veteran
found his second wind. He outworked his young opponent. Through ten
rounds the fight was close.
Dzinziruk came out jabbing in round eleven. The round was his as he
outworked Gonzales. A good right by Gonzales opened the last round.
Gonzales was bouncing and firing punches. The fighters fired from the
pocket in the last thirty seconds.
The judges scored the bout 117-111 Gonzales, 115-113 Dzinziruk, and
114-114. This writer had no problem with the scoring of the bout.
