Apparently, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo wants to learn how to duck.
The
30-year-old slugger (20-2, 17 KOs ) appeared at a press conference in
LA Tuesday to announce his new partnership with reigning Trainer of the
Year Virgil Hunter. Angulo hasn’t laced up the gloves since being
stopped by James Kirkland last year. However, there’s a little more to
the story then just the Kirkland fight.
After the bout, Angulo
turned himself into the immigration detention center in El Centro ,
California . His work visa had expired a few months before. His thinking
was the issue would be resolved quickly. Angulo was anxious to get back
to training and avenge the Kirkland defeat. Instead, he would spent the
next seven months languishing behind bars. Questions still linger as to
why Angulo spent so many months at the detention center. Did they
forget about him?
The detention center released Angulo on August
14, 2012. The bomber needed a new trainer. He had previously worked with
Hall of Famer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain. Going with Hunter is a stroke
of genius. The molder of undisputed super middleweight champion Andre
Ward - Hunter should be able to teach Angulo about the finer points of
defending himself.
Angulo joins Karim Mayfield, Michael Dallas,
Brandon Gonzales, Fernando Guerrero, and Stan Martyniouk. All have
improved under the guidance of Hunter. It was also announced last week
that Amir Khan will be working with Hunter.
On November 10 at the
Staples Center in Los Angles, Angulo will face Raul Casarez (19-2, 9
KOs ) in a scheduled 12-round eliminator. Angulo is excited to be back.
“It’s
very exciting to have my comeback fight in my second home of Los
Angeles ,” said Angulo. “I have been working really hard to give the
fans a good show like they are used to because I am here thanks to their
support. ‘El Perro’ is back!”
