In the co-main event of a "Boxing After Dark" tripleheader, San
Francisco's Karim Mayfield (17-0-1, 10 KOs) remained undefeated with a
hard fought 10-round unanimous decision over tough Mauricio Herrera
(18-3, 7 KOs) at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y.
With the victory, Mayfield retained his NABO junior welterweight title.
Mayfield
used his superior strength to outwork Herrera in the opening rounds.
Herrera's jab was effective as he kept the shorter Mayfield at bay.
Mayfield
looked a little tense but still was able to find Herrera with some
jolting lefts. Herrerra stood right in front of Mayfield and traded. The
strategy was debatable.
His jab was stinging, but Mayfield was able to land a number of hard rights over the jabs.
Mayfield
opened up a bit more in round three. His three punch combination to the
head and body surprised Herrera. Mayfield's heavier punches were paying
dividends.
Herrera went back to jabbing in round four. The punch
snapped Mayfield's head back, but did not deter him. Mayfield landed
another heavy right at the bell.
He moved his attack to the body
in round five. Another heavy right connected to the chin of Herrera.
Mayfield's uppercut clipped Herrerra's iron chin. A Herrera left hook
opened a cut under the right eye of Mayfield near the end of the round.
In
round six, Herrera came out fast. He landed a triple jab and follow-up
hook. Mayfield ate another right but countered with a left right
combination. The second half of the round belonged to Mayfield. His
heavier punches continued to thud off the body of Herrera.
Herrera
attempted to swarm Mayfield in round seven. His punch volume was
increasing. Mayfield kept finding pay dirt with his powerful right hand.
In
round eight, Mayfield almost ended matters with another heavy right
hand. Herrera’s chin was filled with iron. Herrera kept working his jab.
Mayfield
and Herrera exchanged punches at the bell with Mayfield again getting
the best of the exchange. Herrera won the ninth round with activity.
Mayfield
stepped it up in round 10. Herrera landed a combination, but Mayfield
cracked him with a hard overhand right. His left knocked Herrera
backwards. The round ended with both fighters trading punches.
The scoring of the fight was 96-94, 98-92, and 97-93 all for Mayfield.
Mayfield has indicated that he wants either Brandon Rios or Mike Alvarado in his next bout.
