By John J. Raspanti, Doghouse Boxing: Bantamweight champion Abner Mares (22-0-1, 13 KOs) and Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko (28-3, 22 KOs) are ready to rumble again on Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Their first meeting was a classic fight spoiled by controversy.

Four months ago Mares took Agbeko’s title by a majority decision in a thrilling 12-rounder. Mares attacked Agbeko’s body relentlessly with many of his shots veering south of the border. Referee Russell Mora warned Mares but choose not to deduct a point. In the 11th round, Mares landed another low blow that sent Agbeko to one knee. Mora, out of position signaled the punch as legal.

After receiving a formal complaint from Agbeko’s promoter Don King, the IBF ordered an immediate rematch.

“There will be no more low blows this time, because the world is watching,” Agbeko said. “I’ll prove to the world that I deserved to win the last fight, and I will be victorious Saturday.”

Mares is ready for the rematch.

“I’m really looking forward to facing him again. It took a lot away from the championship. Now I just want to go in the ring and perform, beat him again and fight a good fight.”

Mares holds victories over Vic Darchinyan and Diosdado Gabi. The 26-year-old won the WBO bantamweight title in his 14th professional fight.

Agbeko is ranked number two the IBF. He avenged a loss to Yonnhy Perez in 2010. The 31-year-old fighter first captured the IBF title in 2007.

The first fight between Mares and Agbeko was an exciting 12-rounder. The rematch should be just as entertaining with Mares again getting the victory.

The night will also feature another world championship bout as Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno (31-1, 11 KOs) puts his WBA title on the line against two-time division champion Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan (37-3, 27 KOs), of Sydney, Australia.

“I’m going to fight him the way he’ll fight me. I’m not going to hesitate,” said Moreno.

Darchinyan believes he’s the stronger fighter.

“I’m looking for a smart fight, but for sure I’ll knock him out.”

The doubleheader is a Golden Boy Promotions, Don King Productions and Gary Shaw Productions promotion. The doubleheader will air on SHOWTIME® beginning at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
