ESPN boxing writer Dan Rafael is reporting that "Sugar" Shane Mosley is coming out of retirement to fight welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi April 27 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn , New York . Showtime Boxing will televise the event.

Mosley, 41, hasn’t been seen in the ring since being punished by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez over 12 one-sided rounds last May. The outcome convinced the proud warrior to retire. Recently, after working with his 22-year-old son Shane Jr., Mosley felt good enough to give boxing another shot.

"Me working with my son and other up-and-coming fighters, I felt good,” Mosley told Rafael. “My body feels better.”

Mosley last tasted victory in 2009 when he defeated heavily favored welterweight champion Antonio Margarita (who had almost entered the ring with loaded hand wraps).
His most significant accomplishment occurred in 2000 when he won a majority decision over Oscar De La Hoya in a hotly contested battle. Most experts at the time considered Mosley the number one pound for pound fighter in the world. It’s also being reported that his father Jack, who last worked Mosley’s corner in 2008, will train Mosley.

"I'm excited to have my father back with me as my coach," Mosley said. "To be able to go into a fight and (try to) win a world title again with my father in the corner, that is like a storybook.”

Malignaggi, 32, will be defending his title for the second time. He won the strap last April by stopping Vyacheslav Senchenko in the Ukraine . His first defense was a less than satisfactory split-decision over Pablo Cesar Cano on the inaugural opening of the Barclays Center . Malignaggi remarked after the bout that Cano was a vastly underrated opponent.
