Mikey Garcia (31-0, 27 KOs) knocked defending WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-12-2, 27 KOs) down four times en route to an eighth round technical stoppage at The Theater at Madison Square Garden Saturday night. The bout was part of the HBO Boxing After Dark Series.
The bout was halted after eight rounds were completed due to an accidental headbutt to the nose of Garcia.
Garcia, 25, looked calm and collected in round one. His jab stung Salido. His right landed to the body. Salido worked his way inside looking to land hooks. Garcia boxed and moved. Salido ran into a check hook and went down on the seat of his trunks. He was up at three with a puzzled look on his face. Salido went down once again less then a minute later. Salido pulled himself up as the bell rang.
In round two, Garcia continued to use his longer arms. His speed was also paying dividends. Salido landed a cuffing shot. Garcia boxed and used the ring. A combination landed on the chin of Salido. The champions  face was already beginning to swell after six minutes of fighting. Garcia stayed on the outside and stabbed his jab in round three. A long uppercut put Salido down for the third time. The gutsy fighter jumped up ready to continue. Garcia stayed patient.
Salido, 32, looked to try and change the fight in round four. Instead, he ran into a straight left that put him down again. Salido was up, but discouraged. He forgot about the knockdown and landed a hard right that surprised Garcia. His pressure and guts were still very apparent.
In round five, Garcia landed two heavy rights that knocked the older fighter back to the ropes. Salido landed a right, but Garcia moved away. The young challenger hurt Salido with another thudding right. Garcia kept boxing effectively in round six. His jab found the mark along with an inside hook.
Salido landed two big rights in round seven that got Garcia’s attention. Garcia handled the onslaught well and went back to boxing. Salido’s right eye was closing. Garcia landed a two punch combination at the bell. Salido probably did enough to win the round.
In round eight, Garcia stood Salido up with a right. Salido kept applying the pressure. His winging shots landed on the chin of Garcia. His head also crashed into the nose of Garcia. The headbutt (called accidental by the referee) broke Garcia’s nose as the round ended.
The doctor examined Garcia’s nose between rounds and stopped the fight.
Scores were 79-70, 79-69 and 79-69 all for the victorious Garcia.
“I told him (Salido) the headbutt was accidental,” said Garcia in the ring after the bout.
“He’s a warrior. He can have a rematch if he wants it,” added Garcia
