For a son, the loss of a father can be a gut wrenching experience. The pain is palpable and encompassing.
Junior welterweight contender Mike Dallas Jr. (19-2, 8 KOs), who faces heavy-handed Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 20 KOs) in a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP bout January 26 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada certainly understands this.
Dallas, 26, lost his dad to leukemia five months ago.
“My father Mike Dallas Sr. was a professional fighter, “ Dallas told theboxingvoice website a few weeks ago. “He brought me up in the boxing world. I know he’s watching over me right now and I’m going to leave everything in the ring on fight night.“
Matthysse, 30, is the WBC interim junior welterweight titleholder. He captured the belt when he TKO’d  Ajose Olusegun last September in Las Vegas. The Matthysse record shows losses to Devon Alexander and Zab Judah. Both decisions were controversial.
Dallas, has won his last two fights impressively. He decisioned  Miguel Gonzales and dispatched Javier Castro in six entertaining rounds. His training camp, directed by 2011 Trainer of the Year Virgil Hunter has been grueling.
"This fight means a lot to me," said Dallas. "It's the biggest fight I've had. If I win this fight, it takes me to another level."
Matthysse, usually loses the first two rounds. Against Alexander, he arguably lost the first three, but floored the slippery boxer in round four with a left hook. Dallas is very aware of what Matthysse will bring on January 26.
"I'm just going to be myself and box and take advantage of openings," Dallas said. "I'll do what I've been taught to do and force him to have to make the adjustments as the fight goes on. I'm just going to be smart and fast."
To win, Dallas must earn the respect of the hard charging Matthysse. He was stopped by Josesito Lopez in 2011.
Matthysse will apply the pressure.
Can Dallas take it?
The Matthysse vs. Dallas fight is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Arano Box Promotions.
