This Saturday at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, NY, on the undercard to Paulie Malignaggi vs. Adrien Broner, 22 year-old Philly light middleweight Julian Williams, 12-0-1 (7), fights his first 10 round bout in meeting the former WBA light middleweight champion Haitian Joachim Alcine, 33-4-1 (19), of Quebec, CAN. It looks like a big step up for the young fighter but he’s got the potential to be a future champion and what better time to challenge the 37 year-old former champion then now when he’s coming off a pair of defeats.

Williams’ last 4 opponents have a total 39-14-7 record with the last 3 being stopped. It has only been 37 months since his professional debut and 3 bouts scheduled for 8 rounds. The gym wars in Philly were a training ground for Williams like most fighters from the City of Brotherly Shove. His gym battles with Mike “MJ” Jones and “Hammerin” Hank Lundy could have been the main event in most towns. His home gym is Shulers in West Philly, possibly the best gym in the city.

Williams is under the guidance of Stephan “Breadman” Edwards, as both trainer and manager. He’s had his fighter busy travelling the US in such states as NV, CA 3x, MI, MS, OK, TX and nearby Atlantic City and hometown Philly 2x each. “Julian is ready. It’s a big step up and none of the young 54 pounders have beaten an ex-world champ yet and we are happy to be the first to take the challenge,” said Edwards.

“Juilian is a good young fighter who caught my eye when he was in the amateurs. I am really enjoying watching him grow and continue to challenge himself. I believe Williams is the whole package,” said Brittany “BAM” Rogers. This comes from the youngest female promoter in the country and matchmaker for Peltz Boxing. She has an eye for talent at such a young age.

Where active light middleweights out of Philly have failed recently like Gabe Rosado and Derek Ennis, we look forward to Williams joining the ranks of Philly champions at that weight class like Robert “Bam Bam” Hines and Buster Drayton!
