Regis “Rougarou” Prograis

This writer was not familiar with unbeaten Houston super lightweight Regis “Rougarou” Prograis, 15-0 (12), when he entered the ring with a “werewolf” mask on at the Bally’s show in Atlantic City August 7th. But before the night was out the entire room was “wow’d” by his performance as was his unbeaten opponent Amos “Too Smooth” Cowart, 11-0-1, who came in with red spiked hair looking like a rooster!

Usually when two southpaws face each other it can be boring but this was anything but. The hand speed of Prograis was phenomenal to see. He could land four jabs before Cowart knew what hit him. Cowart smiled most of the time throughout this eight round bout but you knew he was frustrated. He complained he was moving up two weight classes but in his twelve fights six of them were at super lightweight and six at lightweight. In Prograis he had fourteen fights and only came in under 139 once before that night and as heavy as 151.

This 26 year-old Prograis didn’t start boxing until he was 17 and 6 years later he found himself in the 2012 Olympic trials losing to Bryant Perella now 10-0 (9) as a pro and Sammy “The Who Can Mexican” Vasquez now 19-0 (13) as a pro. It wasn’t until Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29, 2005 which was the hometown of Prograis that he moved to Houston where a year later he would start his amateur boxing career. In 2011 he was the USA Boxing National Championships semi-finalist.

Prograis was trained by Hylon Williams, Sr., in the amateurs and whose son Hylon “Kid Cosmo” Williams, Jr. was the 2008 Olympic alternate and 16-1 (3) as a professional before retiring in 2012. His trainer now is Robert Benton. Strength and conditioning coach is Evins Tobler and Prograis is managed by J. Johns with ATR Sports & Entertainment who also advised Omar Henry Rocky Juarez and Dominick Guinn. Currently he advises “Cracking” Craig Callaghan from Liverpool, England and Pablo “El ZanKudO Letal” Cruz from El Salvador/Houston and others.

Prograis turned professional on April of 2012 winning his first four fights in Texas by stoppage before winning a decision over Adauto Gonzalez, 10-8, in Louisiana in June of 2013. He would have bouts in Mississippi, California and Connecticut. In the bout in CT he defeated Abraham Alvarez, 19-7-1 knocking him out in the first round. Cowart was on the same card stopping Anthony Burgin 8-0 of Philadelphia. Prior to that bout Prograis had his first bout scheduled for 8 rounds in knocking out Hector Velazquez, 56-24-3, in 5 rounds in CA. In the 3 previous fights Velazquez had he was decisioned by former super lightweight champion Paul Spadafora, 48-1-1, Jose Roman 17-1-1 and Robert Manzaranarez, 28-1.
