While the main event was heavyweight’s Luis Ortiz and Lateef Kayode the junior middleweights on the undercard at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV, featured a top prospect in Philly’s Julian “J-Rock” Williams, 17-0-1 (10), and No. 6 IBF contender in Jermall Charlo, 19-0 (15), out of Houston, TX. This was a Golden Boy and Mayweather Promotions that went down on the 11th day of this very month.

Williams the No. 3 NABF and No. 7 USBA contender out of Philly showed a solid jab that controlled the entire 8 rounds with a right hand that landed all night in pitching an 80-72 shutout on all three judge’s cards along with DHB. He pinned the first loss on Elizier “Popo" Gonzalez, 14-1 (9), of PR, who had a built up record between PR and DR of tomato cans.

Williams had puffiness outside his right eye from left hooks landed by Gonzalez who had no right hand to go with it. Williams on the other hand didn’t land a solid left hook until the 6th round when Gonzalez also threw his left hook that didn’t quite get there. Williams seemed to be pressing for a fourth straight knockout from the opening bell continuously throwing right hands. This 24 year old has always had “bad intentions” from his amateur days until the present.

The trainer of Williams, Stephen “Breadman” Edwards wanted him to settle down and the knockout would come. The 24 year-old Williams trains out of the top Philly gym at James Shuler’s Memorial Gym in W. Philly. He will be someone to reckon with in a year.

The other junior middleweight also at 24 is the other half of twin Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo, 24-0 (11), also a light middleweight and No. 2 contender in the IBF who was scheduled to fight IBF champion Carlos Molina in March but due to problems outside the ring Molina called off the fight. He hasn’t fought in a year since winning the title and is scheduled to fight No. 1 contender K9 Bundrage October 11th in Mexico.

Jermell stated prior to the fight “we usually do not spar each other because it turns into a war”. That was talking about his brother Jermall who dealt out the first stoppage loss to Norberto “Demonio” Gonzalez, 20-5 (13), of MEX, whom he dropped with a straight right hand in the 5th round. He lost a point in the 4th round from referee Kenny Weeks due to his second low blow. In the 7th and final round he landed a double left hook that had Gonzalez reeling and looking to his corner for a “bail out call” which they immediately did at 1:23 of the round.

Unbeaten cruiserweight Jordan Shimmell, 17-0 (14), of Hudsonville, MI, stopped Joell Godfrey, 17-12-1 (6), of E. St. Louis, IL, in the 7th round. It was a very one sided fight. Shimmell dominated from the outset. Godfrey tried to land on occasion but could not penetrate Shimmell’s defense. Shimmell made Godfrey’s mouth bleed in the 1st round and it got much worse in the 2nd round. Godfrey was bleeding heavily from the 3rd round on and Shimmell would be covered with blood after each round but none of it was his own.

Shimmell was being fouled by Godfrey with elbows, holding, hitting below the belt, etc. No legal blows landed on Shimmell. Shimmell landed hard body blows each round along with numerous head shots. Godfrey began to tire noticeably in the 4th round and thereafter. Godfrey presented no real threat and with Shimmell landing solid punches the commission representative advised the referee Jay Nady to stop the bout.
