Why do boxers who are more skilled than their opposition have to fight so dirty? Ask 32 year-old Chinese Gold medalist Zou Shiming the now 3-0 flyweight with 3 decision wins.
When it was announced after the Shiming-Tozcano fight that the referee of their bout Genaro Rodriguez would later ref the Manny Pacquaio vs. Brandon Rios main event, this writer thought “I guess Rios will have an edge ”! The Pac Man didn’t give him a chance in winning all 12 rounds.
Shiming fought a good fighter in Juan Tozcano, now 4-1 over 6 foul filled rounds allowed by Rodriguez. In the first round no fewer than 4x Zou pushed the head of Tozcano down and hit him with a solid right to the back of the head without ONE warning from Rodriguez. The fouls continued for the entire fight with only ONE warning this writer noticed by Rodriguez.
Back in October of 2010 this writer watched as the USA team lost 6-5 to China in Chinatown, NY, at the Capitale. I went back to my story and saw how Zou used the same dirty tactics to American Santos Vasquez in winning an easy 15-2 decision. The referee’s that night allowed the Chinese boxers to foul all they wanted but lost a couple of close decisions on the American judges scorecards.
Philly’s Jesse Hart defeated Hanting Zhang 15-7 go give the USA a 5-3 lead. Hart’s college coach from Philly Al Mitchell (at Northern Michigan U.) worked the corner of the 178 winner Fanlong Meng who dominated Marquese Weston 18-2.
